Default GEAR BOX TRANSPLANT QUESTION????

i have a 01 uk spec wrx, it has a good bit of performance mods done to it and should be circa 300 to 330bhp, but i think the gearing is too high and its hard to get going.. i was thinking of putting a classic sti 4dr gear box into it, ( not the gear box with variable diff) would i have to use the rear sti dif aswell???? or would the gear box be allright on its own. would there be any other complications in transplant that i should know of?????

The front differential is incorproated in the gearbox itself; you will need the rear diff to suit. Btw: Id be looking at a six-speed New Age transmission, not an old Classic one!

Did all UK STi's have the 6 speed box ? Is a 5 speed box available (2nd hand)
that will suit a modded newage wrx ?

They do; they were 'fixed' until the end of 2004 when the MY05 cars became available (WR1s had DCCD one year earlier though).

It depends what final drive your existing differential uses..... You can only retain this diff if its the same but when youre talking about fitting a new transmission worrying about swapping the rear differential seems to be missing the point. As Ive already explained 2002; 2003 and 2004 cars do not have DCCD: 2005 onwards cars do have it as do JDM cars.

If you get a 6 speed from a UK sti then you won't have to change the rear diff. If you use a JDM 6 speed then you will.

Also if you do get a DCCD you can still run it on your car, it will be premanently open (which it would be anyway 99% of the time)
