Well, to be pedantic it means the model introduced to be sold during the model year. For example, an MY98 is available from December 1997 until the dealers have run out of them - which might be sometime into 1999. I know that coz my first turbo wagon was ordered in September 1997 from a UK dealer and what I took delivery of on Christmas eve that year was the first MY98 the dealer had received. And much nicer than the MY97 I test drove it was too
The "MY" terminology covers, in effect, the specification of the car that is for sale that year. It is used here because "MY01" means, to us, the first "bugeye" newage Impreza, for example - it's a convenient way of labelling a particular spec.
