I've got a totally unmodified MY95 WRX 260bhp saloon and would appreciate a bit of advice on where to start with mods, without busting the bank (initially, at least).

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I'm a bit of a novice here. The guys I bought the car from/have it serviced by reckon an exhaust decat/Blitz pipe would be best but what would you lads/lasses expect this to cost?

Also, in terms of body styling mods where to start with a car the age of mine?

Regarding performance mods I would advise an induction kit, (or if you you think that the constant sucking sound would be too much go for a K&N panel filter), and remove the under wing snorkel and attenuator box in conjnction with a decat centre pipe and st.st. backbox. You could go the whole hog and fit a down pipe which will give a consideral performance boost, sounds great and spits flame however, you will have to swap back to your old pipe every MOT,and its a bit of pig to DIY without a ramp.

A fairly cheap suspension mod would be to upgrade to heavy duty front and rear anti roll bars and sway links, from Scoobymania, to reduce roll. Then get your front and rear geometry reset to Prodrive or Powerstaion settings.

Styling, well thats a personal thing but if you have the low rear spoiler I would swap this for a high level spoiler, check out the Private for sale notices on this BBS.

Another cheap mod would be to fit a quickshift, typically from Falkland in Glenrothes.

Cheers for those - Stratman, I don't really want to get into stuff that's going to involve removing exhaust systems etc just for MOT's.

However,i If I went for a straightforward induction kit etc, would it involve replacing the standard twin pipe with a loud monster one or not? Forgive my ignorance, but approx what kind of money would we be looking at to have this kind of kit added and approx how much extra beef would it give (ie under say 20bhp = £700 = not worth the bother for the amount of mileage I do).

Styling-wise I've node a bit more research following the replies and I'm keen on a high spoiler and perhaps Scoobysport front spoiler, so thanks for that.

(Hope this isn't beginning to sound like a P1 WR-type of enquiry.....)

An induction kit is another term for air filter kit, which draws air in whilst filtering to be mixed with petrol then into engine to go bang then out through exhaust system, although many company's will say <B>extra BHP by using ours</B> this is not always the case, but the gains in pickup can be quite noticable.

I'm learning......could be that's where I'll start then and come back to the pipe in due course - not really sure about one of those that looks like a cross-section through a party seven can; a bit too much of a twoccer-target round where we live, although I do like the noise, it must be said.

Firstly, welcome into the scooby world!

Mods, ahh, a favourite subject.

Luckily (or unluckily, depends on how you look at it) my 94 WRX Wagon came with a choice mods. (see my profile and hit my site to find out what they are.)

Basically I'm with what most of the others have said. Go for performance air filter, eg; ITG, or an induction kit.

I've got a HKS Super Power Flow induction kit on mine, and it does make a bit of a sucking noise, but it is rather nice.

Nice exhasust system would be good as well. Mine is, as I've just found out, an Apexi backbox, with large, ie; 3inch, center section, and standard downpipe. This makes for a rather loud but groovy system.
If I have to replace the system I'd either go for an HKS Super Drager system, or a scoobysport system. But there are loads available, it's up to you.
As for downpipe, hmm, unless you don't need a cat, and I'm sure that post 92 cars do (thought it was post 94?) then I'd leave it alone, as it's a pig having to change it for MOT time. I know it's only once a year, but it's still a pain.

New suspension and prodrive geometry might be a good idea as well.

Oh, and a Power Brake Support Braket would be a good investment. This basically stops the brake master cylinder from moving when you hit the brakes hard, this is due to it being on the bulkhead, thus this decreases brake performance, the braket sorts this. (someone correct this if I'm wrong)

As for breaking the bank, ooh lets see:

* 17inch or bigger wheels
* Brembo/AP 4 or 6 pot calipers
* Equal length manifold
* PossumLink ECU
* STi engine

Apparently NO 3rd party replacement filters meet Subarus filtering requirements.

Read into this what you wish. I'm sticking with my standard one as I'm only 8 months into my 3 year warranty.

Yeah - funny you mention the STI engine...the first Scoob I testdrove was a version 3 and I managed to spin it, much to the chagrin of the guy who'd imported it but not pre-sold it..anyway, no damage done, apart from to his shreddies. A I tipped-up to his place in a Saab 900 conv he must have have reckoned I was going to be a kitten in his car.....

Like the idea of the filter but will this do in my warranty?

I was in a similar situation a couple of
months ago. I have got a MY94 WRX. My first
thing was wheels, I got a bit of a windfall
and thought getting the expensive stuff out
of the way was a good move.

Anyway I got a Magnex backbox, the round
tail pipe (3 1/2"). The difference it
makes is staggering! The car is *much* more
responsive, sounds fabulous and pulls significantly harder than before.

I also managed to get a magnex center pipe
and have just had the Blitz induction kit
delivered, I'll let you know how it goes.

I think the back box would be a good, non-bank-breaking move. The magnex is really well built and sounds great.

when I bought my WRX I was on a tight budget hence I sought out a few bargains.....a pipercross induction kit is a good start at under £80 new, also new front spoilers can be had for under £200 (painting approx £75) and high EVO rear spoilers for about £200 (painting £100)
