would a missing dump valve coarse smoke !
Just been to have a look at a damaged impreza (my97 uk) and the guy says the dump valve has been stolen! Im not a mechanic but surly this shouldnt coarse thick black smoke? IS it me or is it burning oil and the engine is f##ked? You have also got to ask yourself how have they pinched a component from under bonnet when its all alarmed up. dodgy i think.

If the pipes to which the DV was connected to wasn't plugged, then yes it will run very rich and can smoke.
This is due to air escaping that has been metered by the MAF sensor (which regulates fueling), which should go into the engine and not escape.
