Default Malfuction Indicator lamp - is this serious?

The OBD malfunction indicator lamp came on to day whilst driving on my 04 wrx:

refered to the manual which indicates that there is a problem somewhere in the emission control system and that service is required.

Manual also states the following:

If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on whilst driving, we recommend that you have your vehicle checked/repaired by your Subaru dealear as soon as possible. Continued vehicle operation without having the emission control system checked and repaired as necessary could cause serious damage.

Im a little worried as I have to use the car to get to work and back for the next few days and the only time I can have the car checked is on the weekend. Don't fancy taking it to subaru as the car is far from standard and don't wanna get ripped off (spec: ).

Looking at getting the car booked in tomorrow at ProSport Subaru authorised performance service centre.

Is there any immediate danger? has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Thanks all

Peace

Mine did the same on my old 03Sti not long after I got it. Recovery came out and reset it and it was booked in by dealer. It came on again a couple of days later but I was told it was not serious, and to drive as normal. In the end I think the downpipe(maybe?) was replaced because a sensor had gone and they couldn't get it out!!!

Wife had same thing on VW Golf TDi and dealer said the same thing. That turned out to be a manifold sensor.

I had this CEL issue - dealer obtained code from diagnostic check which indicated that the 'neutral position switch' - which apparently is a common cause of CEL lighting up - if due to this, the 'engine check light' light comes on when one is changing gear - and I had noticed that it always occured when I was accelerating hard up to high revs. and changing from 3rd to 4th. First few times it would come on for a while 'flashing' then the final time it came on and stayed on - despite trying trick of disconnecting battery overnight which is said to sometimes reset things.

Anyway, had the 'neutral position switch' replaced by dealer at £71 inc. VAT - and no problems since. Could have ignored it as car safe to drive with faulty neutral switch - but would you really want to ignore light being on and then knowing it is effectively masking when something more serious may be occuring?

O2 sensor in the exhaust for me, replaced under waranty, apparently a common problem so I wouldn't be overly worried, let us know how it goes
