Grating/Scraping noise from rear wheel
Hello all
Loving every minute of my 2004 standard WRX. Just bought it a month or so ago.
However, I have a slight concern - there is an audible grating or scraping noise from one of the rear wheels. Not loud enough to hear from inside the car unless the window is down and I'm driving against wall or fence that reflects the noise back.
Mechanics claim there's nothing wrong with it but it's still there. If I apply the brakes then the noise goes away - so it sounds as if maybe the pads aren't retracting enough and are just touching the discs - but I would have expected it to fade with wear but it hasn't.
Any clues? I'm told its nothing to worry about but I'd rather be sure.
Cheers in advance.

not to sure of subaru rear brake set up ,noise could be incorrectly adjusted handbrake ,sticking caliper, excess brake dust/rust .
best way is too jack vehicle up and establish which wheel the noise comes from.remove wheel and inspect.
sometimes a clean and grease and adjustment is all that is needed.
hope this may help.
cheers dan

Thanks Dan
It's due a service shortly so I'll get it looked at specifically.
A friend with an STi reckons its a relatively common thing with scoobies but I'll rest easier when its been properly diagnosed.
Cheers.

Pull on the handbrake a little (not enough to stall or spin) at 20-30mph and drive with it on for 2-300 yds. This will clear any build up of brake dust from the integrated rear parking drum brake (in the bell housing). If it persists then maybe have a look at the wheel bearings.

to be honest it has helped - at first I thought the noise had gone completely but it is still there - I'm sure its less noticeable now though - I'll give it another quick go tomorrow.
...I was a bit wary with the handbrake - I may be a bit more assertive tomorrow...
Does the noise from yours have a definite metallic sound to it?

I guess you could say it sounds metallic, I originally thought it was a brake pad rubbing (had them replaced when I bought the car), but I don't think that wouldn't make the 'swooshing' noise I hear. I'd have thought it would have been constantly grating not on, off, on off etc. as the wheel turns.
