Default Performance meters - your views?

I have been looking at purchasing a performance meter like the AP22 or the G-Tech Pro. You know the ones that you tell it the weight of the car and it can wok out the quarter miles, 0-60 time etc?

Does anyone use one of these? Whats your opinion of them? Are they reliable
Do you have to get your car on a weigh bridge to make them worth it?

I anybody is selling one, give me a shout.

The Hoff.

Save your self a few quid and use this:

http://www.letstorquebhp.com/calculator.asp

I entered my bhp figures and the times it came up with are about in line with what the mags recorded my car at. I got 13.1s 1/4 mile at Santa Pod last year on my first ever attempt, which isn't that far off what Prodrive recorded as their best figure (12.8), and only 0.1s different to this web page.

Cheers

useful item, could get some good arguments going. Might have to turn into a game similar to top trumps.

...although it calculates you need over 1000 bhp to do a 1/4 mile in Andy F's time . Probably not to be trsuted for the very high end stuff, but possible ok for us mortal people with 300 - 400 bhp cars.

Unless Andy f is running over 1000+ !

They are very good if:

1> You are on a totally flat surface.
2> They are correctly callibrated on a totally flat surface.

So if you go down the pod, very accurate. And useless since you will have the pods timing equipment.

I use a road dyno, not the simplest since you have to plug into a laptop after. Though I don't take heed of it's readings of power I always use the same stretch of flat (to the eye) road averaged over both directions.

The results are fairly constant and as you change things you get a direct picture of what's happened. Speed vs Revs is very acurate given it only guesses your revs from your gearing and speed so I take acceleration figures as reasonably accurate.

And although you can be sure of the figure, you can see if you've gained or lost power and look at the curves which is handy.

Ok guys, thanks for you input. I tried the calcualtor and came out with a 12.73 quarter mile. I will have to buy one of the systems and compare!

Its good for comparative purposes, as in on the same stretch of road, same input data etc to see the effects of modifications or just to see if its running OK

They are two totally different things. One attempts to calculate the cars performance and the other measures it.

A car that should do 1/4mile in xx.xs is one thing, but doing it is another.

The AP22 calibrates itself to the road surface/ angle etc before the run. You then do the same in the opposite direction and take the average. This is how it's done for the mags etc. All the times taken with the AP22 don't need to know the weight of the car or it's drag coefficient. You only need to enter that for it's power estimation which is @ wheels.

Bob, I wasn't saying the calculator is a fool proof way of determining 0-60 or 1/4 mile times, but it could be considered instead of buying hardware.

If someone wants proper timings, a trip to Santa pod might be the best answer, although I'm not sure if they give 0-60 times?

But they are two different things.

The hardware is available cheaply enough.

The brochure/calculator saying your car can do xx.xs is very different to being able to do it.

Santa Pod doesn't do 0-60mph timing, nor do the other main drag venues.

The hardware (G-tec/Ap22s) is surprisingly accurate.

It has a functionality to take into account tilt... up to you if you take these things as accurate but I still say they are not. Well either that or my car is very very quick.
