You need a minimum semi synthetic 10w40, depending on mileage a fully synthetic but if your car has not been run on this at any time (and the mineral oil aint good in scoobs) id stick with the semi synth.
Shell Helix is the recommended oil for a scoob, though there are other brands that do a 10w40 oil also.

If you have a local Euro Car Parts you can get Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5W40 in a 25 litre drum for IRO 73 quid plus vat. Works out at 17.16 per 5 litres, or 15.44 per oil change, based on a 4.5 litre fill. Superb fully synthetic oil from the makers of Silkolene which is up to date with all the latest spec, unlike many other supposed synthetic oils. I wouldn't use that stuff P!$$y Pete keeps touting in a Trabant, dredged from the bottom of a Grimsby tar pit

Thats good value what corradoboy says ^^^^^^^^

But remember it will lose it's octane rating if kept for a long time!!

Silkolene Pro S 10w-50... what I use. If I had to use something else it would be Motul 300v.

Silkolene is made by Fuchs, hence why the EuroParts stuff is so good. Same stuff is twice the price from other suppliers.

The only problem with fully synth is that if your car has never used it and is high mileage then your wasting your money buying it as the damage it prevents has already been done.
Hence the reason ive said go for the usual 10w40 semi synthetic.

I had the same question about which oil to use, and everyone recommends different manufactor's and grade's. Someone said I should email or speak to Oilman ( on here ) I spoke to Guy on the phone, and he was very very helpful, asked me what car I had, miles, modifications, how I drive it etc and he recommended a certain oil that would suit my car the best. I was never under any pressure to buy any oil from himself. ( But I did anyway - its only right I think, plus the price was very good )

I ordered the oil, and it came the next day.

I cannot say a bad word about the bloke. Fantastic service.

His web-site is - www.opieoils.co.uk

BTW, the oil I got was Silkolene 10/50

I cant remember the exact price off the top of me head Pete, I just paid for it.

I think it was thirty summat quid for 5L delivered. I dont know exactly until I get me bill. It was something around that price I remember.

Oooh, and the oil was purple in colour also which made a pleasant change

This is the exact oil from his web-site
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/performanc...d%2010w-50.pdf

Its listed at 43 quid, but im sure it didn't cost me that, infact im positive it didn't.

No-one ever pays what the RPI is ......... they will 'cut-you-a-deal' that makes you think you have got a bargain!! It's an old marketing trick - oilman used to come on here (and every other car BBS) stating that they have an offer on. If it was in March, then it was a Spring Offer - August, it was a Summer Clearout - December, a Xmas Special Gift Offer!!

All absolute poppycock of course ............. and yes, at £30+ for 5 Litres I am VERY sure that they were nice and friendly and chatty and 'helpful' whilst parting you from your money!!

£14:99 is ALL you NEED pay for Oil to put in the Scooby ....... if paying more than twice as much gives you a warm feeling, then, by all means pay it

My Motor Factor, selling me the Oil at £14:99, is making a nice fat profit!!

Yes I know what your saying Pete, I used to work as a mechanic at a main dealers for 10 years, unfortunately packed in due to an illness and ive forgot most things if im being honest with you, but from what I remember and think about is in any field whether it be Engineering, Construction, Medical Services etc I believe in more often than not that you get what you pay for, and speaking to Guy ( oilman ) he knows his stuff on oil ( not saying for a second that you's guys on here don't )

Its like, whats the best pop, Netto Cola or Coca-Cola, taste similar, look similar, priced differently but give either one to a thirsty 5 year old on a summers day and he wont be bothered which one he has.

Call me old school, but like I said I think in most cases you get what you pay for, and for your pride and joy, id put the best stuff I can in it if im being honest regardless of cost ( thats the cost of oil mind in comparison ! )

ABSOLUTELY!!!

Buy some normal oil (good quality, mind!) re-packege it - market it well, call it some fancy name like RallyX - Sliko - MuchoCosto and the daft will fall for it!

50 is WAY too thick for the Scooby Engine anyway!!! - it's like frigging treacle!! 40 is what you need (maybe even 30 if you rarely get up to hot temps.)

5W is good for the winter months but 10W is a good all-rounder.

Ok then Gaz and Pete, let me ask you this,

Just for arguments sake,

If you were offered a free 5lt carton of oil, which would you take, the stuff you put in your car ( £10 and £14.99 oil for 5lts ) or the Silkolene stuff at 45 quid ?

I would put the Silkolene in - if they were both FREE.

Thats NOT because I believe it's better - it's because I am saving more money (and I simply cannot resist that!!)

One thing I DO know - it will NOT protect my engine any better on my 6-monthly oil change regime!!

If I wanted to change my Oil after, say 2 years, then I WOULD choose the Fully Synthetic!!

But remember one thing - the £40 Oil AND the £15 Oil (if both Fully Synthetic) are tested and pass the very SAME specs and standards!!!

One is called 'Silkolene RallyX Plus Special Impreza Blend' ..... the other is called Halfords Fully Synthetic. Thats an expensive name to pay for!!!!

I must agree to disagree with you there matey, if that was the case, why is it that most Subaru performance specialists and other performance specialists etc use Millers oils or Silkolene at 40 quid, and not the 15 quid stuff ?

I think it boils down to mostly cost, with a bit of preference on which brand thrown in for good measure, if we were all cashed up to the b0ll0cks, we'd put the best stuff in, which 9 out of 10 cases is the most expensive !!

Must be like taking candy from a baby, getting you to splash your dosh!!

Don't get me wrong ....... if it makes you happy, then do it!

In answer to your question about the 'Specialists' ..... lets see now - they can either:-

1. Put good quality Oil in and charge the Customer £15 for it, this Oil is the Oil SUBARU recommend!!! (SUBARU are the 'specialists' who designed and built your machine, by the way!) ... this Oil costs the outfit £8

PROFIT = £7

2. Put equally good quality Oil in and charge the customer £40 for it, Subaru do NOT recommend this Oil as they realise that it is out-of-spec. ... this Oil costs the outfit £12

PROFIT = £28

I won't insult your intelligence by spelling out why the 'Specialists' convince you that you 'need' the £40 Oil ..................

The TRUE specialists, SUBARU, do NOT recommend such Oil ......... Guess who I listen to!!
