Noisy clutch

I occasionally get a metallic whining noise when engaging into first and sometimes second gear. First noticed it a 2k miles. Sounds like metal rubbing against metal.
Doesn't affect the drivability of the car one bit but its starting to annoy me!
Anyone had anything similar?
Surely this can't be a characteristic of the car?
