Default Repairs ££££

My scoob is dead - UK MY00 Impreza Turbo, 90K.

M6 Toll Road Friday afternoon, rattling noise in engine. Before I reached the end of the slip road, Check Engine light came on and it cut out.

Apparently it's knackered - big ends, crankshaft, etc etc - sometimes they just go??

Has anyone else been through this? - I could do with some advice. As far as I see my options are

-rebuild
-short engine from Subaru
-find a 2nd hand engine...

A lot of money to spend on car worth £4K

£6K is encouraging - makes me feel better about forking out.
Funnily enough it was overdue the 90K service by about 200 miles. I set off worrying about that too. Maybe holidays are for wimps?

If you need a new engine I'd recommend AnG Services. Call (020) 8963-0333 and ask for Angie. They're in Park Royal, just down the M4 and up to Hanger Lane.

Are you able to re-build it yourself?

That always seems to me to be the best and cheapest route - not to mention the way that will give you most pleasure and sheer satisfaction of a job done right!

Hi mate,

Sorry to hear about your engine and this will mean a few thousand to repair.

Do not go down the 2nd hand route unless you are plannig on selling the car as you cannot guarantee the reliability of the unit.

Contact David at API on 01926 614333 and have a chat with him. Then weigh up your options.

Regards

Esh

Same thing happened to me in '97, but i was on the M5.

Oil was p!ssing out from everywhere, was all up the boot too and cars behind had their wipers on when dry.

I was faced with a £4k bill. Engine rebuilt by prodrive.

'Fraid it's not going to be cheap. As others have said API seem to be one of the best at this and getting you back on the road.

*Mine was caused by an induction kit and no remap after...

Thanks for the recommendations guys Esh and Gaz; much appreciated

ALTHOUGH be careful, as you will now be tainted with PSLewis's ' API **** licker' syndrome which he seems to apply to anyone that has been or is happy with the work we do here and that mentions it at any time.

Grandjambon give me a call for a no obligation chat if you wish. Good Luck no matter what.

Hi David,

Hope you had a great holiday. Anything left of API in your absence? Only joking!!!

Credit where credits due. I'm not in the habbit of "****" licking anyone for work that I have paid to have carried out and I'm not doing so either.

But I would thank you for the no obligation chat we had and the advice you had given me both before the engine was rebuilt and indeed after.

It also helps that the engine hasn't gone bang either. I've not run it in still yet. Just about on 900 miles so we need to have a chat about which ECU as I'm struggling to decide but we shall leave that till I get back from my hols.

Regards

Phew that's a relief! another one we've got away with

Still short of the Ecu for your car we expect them in this week according to the suppliers - so we should be all set and ready for you after your hols.

Apologies for the hijack of this thread, Mr Big Cheese.

No worries at all (although I thought jambon was French for ham???)
Difficult situation now. David you obviously have legendary status on ScoobyNet for very good reasons, BUT, the car is currently in with another independent scooby specialist - they are going to strip it down and have a look at the damage...(best way forward?)

TBH it's my own fault - blokes trip up to N.Wales and we all decided to show off on the M6 Toll - 135mph out of a car overdue it's 90K service isn't most intelligent (it won't happen to me.....).

What's the best way to contact you David - get details from web site?

I can't do it myself as I don't know my **** from my elbow and if I am going to spend the money I need to know I can trust the work. How fragile will the car be after rebuilding?

Sorry to hear about this catastrophe - I'd be interested to know what engine oil you have been using.

This happened to me luckily a friend who knows his stuff managed to source an STI bottom end and fit it - these are a bit more robust, this maybe the best route.

whatever you do - dont regrind the crank, it will last you two minutes!!!!!

Don't know about the legendary bit. But thanks anyway. I obviously got my hams and cheeses mixed up. Big Cheese is a more normal phrase than Big Ham unless you do amateur dramatics...................

Contact me off the number by my profile on here.

You know where to get me if you wish, I do not want to appear to be nicking work off other Subaru specialists.

Good Luck David APi

Well funnily enough sort of....there were three of us, Golf GTI, Vantage V8 and me in the blue scoob. The TVR made a lot of noise and looked like he wanted to play for a minute... didn't mean to hassle though!! If I did I learnt my lesson...

Ha ha, you've now got more to worry about than just your blown engine. Self admission of speeding on a public forum, and speeds that can land you in gaol. I've reported you Expect a visit from your friendly local police officer soon.

Hope they throw the book at you

Fair play to you mate; not many have the ***** to admit they may have contributed to the failure, they just start going on about how the cars are inherently poo; chocolate pistons etc... complete BS.

I'm not a technical expert, that's where David comes in -who, by the way, gets my glowing approval after what he did to my Scooby- but these cars just don't seem to like sustained Vmax runs. I've spoken to several specialists now who all seem to say that people they see for a rebuild will usually admit -albeit quietly- that the failure was preceeded by a redline in 5th attempt! People seem to disagree about this, but it seems that the most common explanation is poor airflow over the top mounted intercooler owing to the areodynamics of the bonnet at speeds into 3 figures! Temps shoot up, det sets in and it's goodbye cruel world for the engine!

I'm guessing that FMIC equipped cars should then, in theory, not fail for the above reason under sustained 3 figure speeds?

I hope you get it sorted out quickly and without too many "discussions" with your bank manager!

You'd do very well to take any advice David gives you. I'm a big fan of Api and if PSLewis calls me an **** licker, it's just cause he's jealous, eh Pete!

Thanks for the note. Even more annoying is that I had read a post on here about a year or so ago that mentioned airflow and risks of prolonged speeds over a ton. Chuffed that I chose to ignore it in the 'heat' of the moment.
A trip to Berkshire Cycles is planned for this weekend together with a pair of tight fitting cycling shorts and an illuminous yellow jacket. The girls at work will be overjoyed.
