Put the original airbox on with a genuine Subaru filter. It makes no difference until the car is making 100bhp more than yours.

i agree with simon on this one. i was going to replace the air filter box etc with a cone filter just after my maf sensor but was advised bya chappy off here not to bother. the reason... he said subaru spent a lot of time developing a very good filtering process (ie the original one) and its one of the best anyway with the tubing going under the wheel arch. unless youre going to huge power simply replacing the standard air filter with a k&n one for example will do your car just service.

only an opinion off a mte on here but im sticking to it, he knows his **** and will be buying a new filter instead of induction kit...

if your looking for the standard air box mate try doing a search in the forsale section or start a thread in the wanted section. theres loads of people on here that have propbably upgraded and dont need theirs anymore. better than going to a dealer and paying huooj prices.

hth matey!!

The main reasoning against I/K's are heat, as you will be drawing air from the hot engine bay, especially in slow traffic, and this will increase charge temps reducing power unless you isolate the filter and ensure a cold air supply; dirt, as you will again be drawing in air from the engine bay which can be a dirty place; and vibration, as I/K's are known to shake MAF sensors to bits, and if that happens and you don't spot it the engine could be the next thing to blow. As has been mentioned above, the OE airbox is very good for up to 350bhp. You could tinker with removing the intake resonator from the O/S wing and isolating the induction from the engine bay to ensure a clean, cool air supply, along with a Green, K&N or JR Racing panel filter. Speak to a breakers like Grade A or Scoobybits for a used airbox to save cash.

mine came with a HKS, was crap! kept comin loose on MY97 uk turbo, mine isnt really standard, but still filter was poo!

ended up having a bad day and launched it i nthe garage, mate had a spare halfrauds one he had on his car when he brought it (escort gti) universal fit, wacked that on just to last till i sorted it, dont do many miles but went from peterborough to lakeside one sunday and it worked fine, felt alot more responsive that the hks one

Nipped in local halfrauds and brought a new one, got some 2mm thick steel sheet off another mate who made it into a heat sheild, perfect!

Filter was only 18 quid!
