Default rentention.

this may be a dumb question but here goes,

i'm in middle of selling my car, but i have a personal reg i wish to obviously keep.

so do i have to stick the plate on rentention asap?

if so how long would it take for the v5 to return in the new reg?

OR

can i sell the car on my plate then do the rentention part at the same time as i send of the new owner part?

Local DVLA office (one near to me) turns the V5 registration documents around in about two/three weeks (very efficient office).

Put you plate on retention and send off the V5 + MOT certificates (best to use "Special Delivery").

Your replacement V5 and MOT certificate with the new number will be sent to you.

It is quite straightforward - don't worry about loosing your private registration number.

Dont sell your car with the private reg still on it mate unless you have a very trusting buyer. The plate actually becomes his property after the sale of the car. My friend was unfortunately a victim of such a sale and the DVLA have confirmed he has no legal recourse to get it back.

I was lucky to have my new car which the plate was going on to so it was a straight forward and immediate transfer. Best getting it on retention straight away and you'll probably get the original registration mark that the car was issued with.
