Default How 'ard' is the clutch?!

This is very vauge and generalised, but just about to take possesion of a 02 sti ppp which has done about 40k, no clutch change yet-
Q. When have you lot had to replace the clutch due to 'reasonably' normal use and what sort of cost will be likely?

I was looking into the api stuff because i am going to be giving this car plenty of stick, do you think i have grounds to negotiate a lower price as its got to be on its way out surely?.

83,000 miles, not needed one yet. Take care of it and it should last a very long time

Yeah i take your point mate, but its not me thats done the wearing and tearing 'yet!' So obviously a bit cautious as i dont want to shell out £700 in the first month! I guess if the clutch is at the top of the pedal that is a good indicator?...

find some free space hold the foot brake put some revs in and slowly let the clutch out, if it stalls your fine other wise it'll slip and you know its time for a new one

One other note when you come to change it i'd recommend getting a skimmed or lightened flywheel, one of my best mods IMO

I've just noticed a clunking noise when I bring the clutch up to the biting point when stationary, any ideas ??

P.S. - STi (53) ppp. 29,000 miles.

Probably just the slack in the UJ's and driveshafts I'd expect. Nothing to worry about if it is.

'Course, if the box falls in two halves next week; then you didn't describe the symptoms correctly and it aint my fault I got it wrong

Good advice thanks very much, i will definately try that out. Does lightening the flywheel not narrow the power band at all?

No, in fact it makes spool up faster that then gives you the sensation that the power band is wider. Couple that with a set of ported and polished headers and it'll start spooling up perhaps 3/400 rpm sooner. Then you get a WIDER power band.

Light flywheel £150.00 + VAT from APi; Exchange of course.

[ like for like - not like the rotten sod who sent back a 1600 flywheel that caught us out and the next guy it went out to - especially as he wanted to start and finish the job on a Saturday - boy!!, were we popular that weekend? ]

Not if you make a point of doing it right first time. I've lost count of the number of customers who we drag out of a hole after they've been trying to do various things themselves - or with the help of their mate 'the expert '

No reason why you can't do most jobs on a Subaru yourself especially with the support offered from all on here - just some jobs like clutch and gearbox changes are a bit more of a challenge at home on the floor of a domestic garage.

Lightened flywheel sounds good.

Are there any negatives to having a lightened flywheel?

I have a 4.2kilo flywheel in my Bug STI and it's prob a bit too light for road use but i prefer the drive of the car with it on, just watch those pull offs, a few embarassing stalls for the first few days but launch it and it's crazy . Also your engine breaking is reduced for obvious reasons

More throttle response and although it's a small factor, it's still helpful when cornering and have some spirited drives to know that the response is there much more feel IMO

No mate, they just stink when you give them some stick, it doesn't mean it's on the way out! Slipping is a good indication of that.

I've got a MY02 which would develop a similar amount of torque to yours which has just completed 92000 miles, still on the original clutch so it all depends on how well the car has been treated. Having said that, I'm expecting to replace mine soon.

The username is meant to be ironic given the amount of points I've got, although the mileage is mostly motorways it does go to show what can be achieved.
