I wouldn't buy a secondhand one ....

Have you rung around the motor factors?? or a Subaru Main Dealer??

Squirt some carb cleaner into it????? May do the trick!

Has your car got an Induction Kit on? They kill MAFs!!

What makes you think it's the MAF???

It may not be!! And then you waste a few £100!!

Try cleaner first! Nothing to lose if you are going to buy a new one anyway!

I've tried everything else i think:
New plugs
New coils
New Lambda sensor last year
New standard air filter
Fuel cleaner stuff
Oil change

Just had 90000 mile service. Been idling dodgy for a while now, between 500 and 1000 revs. I bit spluttery aswell, it was missing at higher revs but the coils seem to have sorted that.
I've had the car for 4 years and done 40000 miles. MAF hasn't been changed in that time.

Throwing £40 away on a secondhand one is no way to make a new one cheaper ...... risk is just simply too great (and why has the seller got two????) smells like a smelly thing in a cesspit!!

Ok i need a new one then, better start saving. Its still running ok so should i not be too bothered, its not gonna blow up is it?
One last question though if i may,
Is it the same as the MAF on the early UK impreza, if i do get it from a main dealer?

Personally I would not do this, this sensor is so fecking tempremental I would not even attempt to clean it.

One of the cars over here had it's MAF sensor cleaned and then a few days later blew up, due to MAF failure, now it could be coincidence but the choice is yours.

Also I am not one of the ones on here that gets a kick out of scaremongering, so take this reply as you wish.

I'm no expert, but I believe if you unplug the MAF and the car continues to run then it is foobarred. Other indicators are, as you have already pointed out, erratic idling and a flat spot at about 4k revs. If it is, or even if you suspect it is knackered, don't drive it hard. Stay off boost as much as possible and minimise any useage until you get it sorted, unless you want to add a rebuild to the repair bill. When discussing the part with the dealer, ensure you get them to quote just for the MAF sensor, and not the sensor and housing, as the price difference is huge. Whilst you're at the dealers you could ask them to pop it on their diagnostic to confirm the fault.

I'd get a proper diagnostic done, or at least get a fault code by fiddling with the green and white connectors under the steering column (someone tell him how to do it 'cos I don't know).

Not necessarily related, but just because the Lamda was replaced last year does not mean it hasn't gone again. They seem to need replacing fairly regularly on the older models. I've replaced mine twice in 3 years.

Could be the fuel pump I would suggest getting the fuel pressure checked, My old my99 did this my mate who now owns it changed everything you have and it was still the same, He run it over to me and we found with the engine running that you could squash the fuel pipe from the fuel filter with your fingers but on the P1 that i had at the time you couddent squeeze the pipe at all it was rock hard with the engine running he replaced the pump and it was perfect.

Its so close to the turbocharger that cheap ones can last a few months only...
