Car Insurance Cancellation- runaround?
Sister just sold her car and has called to cancel the insurance. The insurance guy has said they will cancel once they receive the certificate back and with a copy of the sale agreement.
Now, having the certificate back is normal though why it can't be cancelled right now is a bit dubious. The really strange thing is this request for a copy of the sale agreement. What bloody business is it of theirs if the car has been sold or not? If you want to cancel insurance on a car surely it's up to if you sell it anyway. They'll no longer be liable. It just sounds like a time wasting measure so they have to provide the smallest refund on the policy.
The insurance guy also said that there would be a cancellation fee (fair enough) but he couldn't say how much it was going to be. He said it would be worked out once they got the certificate back.
Smells like bull to me unless I'm missing something?

When I got rid of my ST170 a few years back I cancelled the insurance. I was with Norwich Union at the time. They didn't require any to be sent to them and repaid the outstanding months left in full. IIRC I had something like £1200 back from them.

I work in insurance claims (bit like admitting to being a taxman on this site ! )
What a lot of bull from this agent. Most UK motor insurance policies follow a standard ABI policy wording. This allows both the insurer and the policyholder to cancel the policy after giving 7 days notice. You are indeed obliged to return the Certificate or to sign a declaration to the effect thet it has been lost, however the standard practice is for the insurer to cancel the policy THEN to request this.
Have never heard of an insurer requesting a copy of the sale ageement under these circumstances ! I would read the policy wording (there will be a clause on "Cancellation) as per Phil, then ask to speak to the Agent's Manager, saying you want the policy cancelled with immediate effect and the return of premium calculated on that basis.
Hope this helps mate.

Ta, folks.
Scobygez, yeah you did reply but I posted on another section - that's where your reply is. I'm a bit rusty with this forum!
The company concerned is Halifax which is part of HBOS who own Esure too, so I'm not surprised about them asking the same.
Gonna tell her to check the policy wording but as most of you have said, it sounds like bull.
She did call back and question this sale agreement crap with another person there. He sort of ummed and ahhhd and then said, "okay just send the certificate back with a covering letter saying you don't have a sale agreement". He was rather sheepish about it all.
Cheers!
