Just done something really stupid....again.

I've got a WRX with STi spoiler, and the nature of my job means I'm forever getting/putting equipment into/out of the boot.

Please take my advice - DO NOT USE YOUR KEY TO LIFT THE BOOT AFTER UNLOCKING IT, IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY TO SNAP. You know, turn key and instead of lifting the boot using the spoiler, just lift it using the key in the lock.

I've got into the habit of doing this, even though I'd already snapped one key and cursed myself for doing it time after time....well I snapped the other tonight, and was left right in the ****. Luckily I managed to get the broken piece, had some superglue in the car, glued the key back together, carefully push the key into the ignition and fired the car up.

Visit to the dealer tomorrow, and I know two replacement keys aint going to be cheap.

PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE - even if I don't listen to it myself !!!!

Or how about having the lock removed from the boot lid of my..cough, cough your Type R and before shutting it flick the latch on the lock so the boot release doesn't work

Type R's haven't got folding seats, out comes the socket set.

I`ll take note of that because that is how I open my boot! Would have never thought the keys would snap that easily. One of the annoying things not having a handle on the boot. Good luck with the new keys

guilty, and my son was playing with the spare key about a month ago and now i cant find the Feking thing.

It probably the fact that I'm opening and closing the boot so often that its stressed the metal in the key, and also may have pulled the key to the side slightly as I removed it.

The shape of my key (and probably most Scoobs) is a lot narrower in the middle than then ends, its at this point it snapped.

Spoke to the dealer this morning, should have a new key for me by tomorrow, don't know the exact cost but understand its likely to be between £110-£120.

Anyone have any idea?

I do that, never broke a key.

But then I don't have a stupid oversized rear spoiler weighing it down so the boot lid weighs nothing.

Use remote to unlock car. Use keys to open boot, put keys in jacket pocket. Get item out of boot, put jacket in boot and shut. ****! Never mind, will get in car and retrieve keys through ski hatch No you won't because car doors have locked automatically because none were opened within x seconds of being unlocked Wait 1 hour for spare key to be brought from home

AFAIK, the transponder is in the black part of the key?

Keep the transponder part of your old key on your key ring and just get a cheap key cut for the purposes of opening locks and turning the ignition.

Already thought of that, and its what I plan to do - the problem is I don't have a key to get a new one cut from, so I have to buy 1 new original.

I've just ordered a new spare key for about £165 for a MY02.

£125 for the key and £40 for programming.

if you have both bits of the key most key cutters can remake the key from that, my dad snapped the key in his isuzu trooper and he got one cut from the two bit no probs.

Shouldnt laugh, but i did pretty much the same thing, but....with worst results.
on the way to work decided to have a little photo session of the car (as she was all nice and clean from the weekend), parked up in a local picturesque spot, put my briefcase with laptop et all into boot.
Took some photos of interior of car, so satnav was in, mobile phone in its holder and the music was on. No problem.

Then closed the door (for what reason i dont know) with keys still in ignition.
Stepped away from car to take some more photos, heard the locks go.
same reason as above, automatic locking after 10 secs...thought

tried every door, boot nothing. thought
buuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeer

so am now locked out of my car, which has the keys in the ignition, all toys in plain view, no phone to call anyone and in a pretty desolute spot, apart from walkers and dog owners.
so nothing to do, but walka couple of miles to the nearest petrol station, use the guys phone, order a taxi to take me to my house (luckily had my house keys and wallet) or else i was fubared !!
Get spare set, then taxi all the way back to my car which............

was still there
never felt such a prize idiot in my life..lesson learnt I hope
and quite an expensive photo session.

(oh and i was a bit late for work and I had 17 messages on my mobile..whoops)

all very well the warnings but are the locking your keys in the car trick not clear !! it's more of a warning not to be forgetful and stupid rather than the car's fault !!

Didn't realise the key could snap! I'm new to WRX ownership and that's the way I had been opening the boot Thanks for the pointer mate, i'll make sure I tell the Mrs!

Been lucky so far but I can see a possible up-coming dilema with my alarm as when the engine is revved (sat in the car) the doors lock. I can see the potential for strange noise from engine bay, open bonnet and have a look whilst revving engine and hey presto the doors lock. That would defo be a pain in the butt.

how would you rev the engine whilst looking in the engine bay ????

are you talking about revving the engine by pushing the throttle lever in the engine bay???
IIRC the locking mechanism works on doors closed, engine started, then it locks them...could be wrong

Yes you do.... It's a really big one that sits on top of the boot lid. Kind of a flat, full width thing, can't miss it

heres a good one, notice driver window is open lean in put key in and turn on, press window switch... **** window comes all the way up automatically and yes you guessed it the car is set to auto lock when the key is turned!!

Same thing happened to me with my old MY94.
Luckily I was on my drive so got the spare set out of the house.

But had to remove the barrel on the boot in order to poke the old bit of key out from the back.
