Panel Filter and Front Grille advice for Bug Eye...?
Hey guys and gals,
Im looking at getting a better Panel Air Filter over the standard one ready for when I either decat my pipe or get a cat back system / backbox. Its an 01MY WRX Bug Eye.
Recommend me a Panel Filter, a few spring to mind if you could air your opinions...the genuine Subaru STI one? Or Green? any others?
Secondly, I have noticed that there is no kind of grille or protection on the lower half of Impreza's, which I thought was a little vulnerable to stones, debris and anything else that could fly up and slam into my Radiator. I dont really want a Silver or Chrome grille, just a normal black coloured grill that would match the standard or STI grille in the upper half of the front.
Any recommendations on this too?
Cheers peeps,
M.

I went for a Green. The STi item is servicable and using those will end up costing you the same again each year. You can buy a cleaning kit for the Green and just do it yourself and it performs just as well.

Echo what Ben says about the STi filter being serviceable. Also, Scoobymag ran a test which saw it come bottom for flow rate, even below the standard paper one. Some people have claimed reasonable performance gains from them though. The problems with oiled filters and MAF's were mostly on 98-00 cars with hotwire MAF's, and especially with ITG filters which were excessively oily. Green, K&N and JR Racing don't seem to ever have caused any problems.

I put a GREEN in my bugeye wrx to start with but started having unexplained CEL alarms a few weeks after, (possibly coincidence), so I replaced it with an HKS Super Hybrid filter (dry) as a precaution.
The GREEN was never identified as the cause of the CEL's but as it's oiled I didn't want to take any chances. A lot of owners use GREEN without any issues so my experience shouldn't necessarily put you off.

For the lower bumper grille mate, try these:
Click on the link and scroll down the page...

I have this on my 2001 Bugeye...
Regarding the panel filter, i went straight for the cold air induction kit and took all the filter housing out...
The induction kit was just a k&n replica off ebay, £70 delivered...
