Thumbs up EVO or SCOOBY !?

Have been in California last 3 mounths and I'm missing home
Need a reason to come back and can't think of anything better that these two !!

If you'd got 12k to spend what would you choose ?

In the red corner EVO V or VI
and in the blue corner Classic STI ????

If the EVO V was perfect then I would go for that. Best looking EVO ever.
Probably out perform the STi

STi sounds much better,

Well of course it has to be a Subaru

an Evo is an inferior car in just about every other way

I've always loved the EVO6, but i had the chance to get one 7m ago and chose the Blobeye STi.

If you can live with the Evo's impracticalities, servicing, running costs and other associates things, then you're not gonna go wrong with it. The 6's are around 10k now though, see: http://tinyurl.com/lbtf2

Having had a classic i would go for the EVO. If you can stretch another 1k, i would get an 03 STi over the evo.

* I shouldn't go lOOking in the 'trader. Gives me weird ideas when i see the above...

£12K is bottom of the barrel for an Evo 260 now, although it would need a bit of work on exhaust and remap to be half decent - ie 350 BHP, but so would any UK STI.

I find my Evo IX just as civilised as a recent Scooby. Key feature is exhaust choice to keep it quiet.

Isn't it cheaper to tune a EVO up to the 350bhp mark than a STI ??

if your chosing between an evo VI or a "classic shape sti" then i would go for the EVO as once you mod them a little the evo would be cheaper and the gearbox would be stronger

Had an EVO V, now got a 03 Sti

All in all, the EVO was the faster, better handling monster car

The STi is softer, slower and more comfortable

The EVO cost quite a bit to maintain but servicing is not a bad as you might think at an independant specialist. Parts are expensive (£300 for a starter motor, £2000 for a second hand delivery milage AYC)

The STi sounds better and you have to put more effort to get the best out of it (thus possibly marginally more rewarding)

The EVO could demolish about anything on the road in bad weather, easy to drift at 80mph in the wet, so stable (AYC doing its job).

Looks, well the EVO V has it for me, the later ones do not have the same impact.

EVO's are generally more expensive than an equivalent condition STi.

Either will bring a smile to you face, but the STi edges it for soul.

I ran an evo V (5) for 2 years with very few issues. Yes it was serviced every 4.5k miles but it was ultra reliable and extremly quick & fast.

Issues were finding a set of pads that would not squeek like bus brakes and that included the dealer brembos.

When I started my business I had to eventually downsize cars so got a late 94 WRX. The evo went from london to penzance and back, took alot of stick and wanted more. The WRX sounded phenominal but I broke the gearbox after 6-7 hours driving home to london.

I now have a v4 type r. Again I've been seduced by the sound the car makes but would swap it plus cash for an imaccualte Evo 5 again. Why I've had no end of hassles with the Type r and don't have the time these days to sort them out. Still its reliable and thats what counts.

All in all I had a beter ownership experience with the Evo which incidently had moer miles on the clock than either of my Subarus.

If you go for a 5 get one with a sunroof too!

I know EXACTLY what you mean.

I had a GSR with the brembo conversion (which to be honest most had) and the sunroof, was a wonderfull car but I sold it because it cost me a fair bit in fairly incidental parts and had this strange starting problem which mean I had to carry a spare bit of wire to jumper from the battery to the starter every now and again.

I once saw a brand new un registered V three years ago, if I saw one now I would probably buy it and keep it forever.

Love my scooby though.

2 weeks ago i would have said evo.

but 5 days of a typr r with dodgy history, dodgy gearbox and dodgy history, i have never driven a car like it.

the type r is simply the best car i have drive. Its totally raw, uncivilised, noisy, smelly and the wife hate it with a vengance, but its fantastic and puts the total fun back into driving.

My yellow evo 8 fq330 looked the part, but it never had the rawness or character of the type r - and I am looking at a £4k bill for a new gearbox!!

2 things I hate about my Evo 7 and thats the poor turn circle and the gearbox feels notchy and not as easy to engage gears like the scooby, I tested my mates Evo 6 the otherday and it feels the same, so theres nothing wrong with the gearbox.

Everyone goes on about the scooby being easier to live with ,but to be fair there both the same, they both are expensive if anything goes wrong, they both use lots of petrol and they both need to be serviced and looked after properly, so dont listen to anyone who says that the scooby is easier to live with because there not! A bloody 1 litre Fiesta is easy to live with!

Handling on the Evo is miles better, I had a quick blast with my mate today in the countryside with his Type RA which was quicker in a straight line, but when the twisties come up the Evo would take the corners in and pull ahead, But My evo was no match for his version 3 STi Type RA on the straights.

Picking out of the 2 cars is very hard, if I hadnt have had 2 scoobys previous to the Evo, and I had to pick out of the 2, I would choose the Scooby as I think the sound of the scooby burble and the whole scooby experience is much more enjoyable then the Evo, and ill never forget the good times i had with my scoobys!

Well..... if it was between a Classic and EVO V, I would have to say an EVO.

But for a little more than £12k, you could now pick up a newage STi!

agree .

having driven jb's evo 9 and a standard sti 05 uk , doing about similar miles in both , I prefer the sti . the only thing is , that even if modded to the same spec as his evo , the scoob still needs a turbo swap to keep up on the straights .

pushed over my favourite roads , I much prefer the feel of the sti , it gives much more confidence . at similar speeds the evo begins to skip and float about a bit and is no where near as relaxed .

the new age chassis is much better than the classic. I have a fairly modded classic with engine , brake and suspension mods and hate how good the new age is as standard . it is making me want to sell mine

about time Mr Banks . i know you have been looking for a while . there in a another league my friend .if you have the chance try a stage 1 evo 6 for a drive also very impressive.modifying is so simple i.e
3 inch exhaust
fuel pump
air filter
remap
on a 9 you can reach 380bhp
7/8 370bhp
6 360 bhp
all on standard engines
you can get more but there safe figures.oh and there reliable .no knock link required .(in my opinion) i dont want to upset the loyal scooby owners.

don't know how often jb comes on here now but to answer you

done
done
ordered
done but getting done properly
got 390 odd bhp with jb adding a boost tweak
standard internals
got knocklink too as it was detting through my det cans. now hot weather has made him turn the boost down to standard until remapped properly

As above, 399 BHP on this one, but turned down a bit since because of some transitional det that I'll sort soon when I can tidy the map up:

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=28808472&noresize=1

This is on stock induction so a bit more to come hopefully, hoping for about 405-410 BHP safely.
