Default Are there any different in a UK and the JDM engines?

For the classic impreza, what are the different among the engines? I heard that the UK engines had the hp reduce or something. Please let me know, because I'm looking to import an engine and the ones in the UK seems cheap.

Also, how is grade A when buying engines?

Thanks

The UKs do have lower bhp than the JDM ones. Do a search for subaru types or the similar, there's a thread lurking around with a link which describes the differences in the subaru range.

The difference was in the ECU not in the engine itself.

i agree with gc8. ecu was mapped differently (timing i believe) because of the higher octane that the japanese get. 100 / 101 ron i think. where as we get 95 ron as standard or on ave 98 ron for super.

Different turbos on early cars make a difference too (saloons used TD04 in the UK and TD05 for JDM?)
Without trying to hijack the thread, does anyone know when the Japanese introduced 100ron fuel over there?

Yes; I do, but i will be contradcited by all of the forum know-it-all know-nowts. 'Premium' unleaded fuel only became available with a RON rating of 100 in 1997-1998, making the accepted wisdom that JDM cars 'all need 100RON' fuel, well; bollocks really. When the majority of Classic Imprezas were built 'Premium' fuel was 97-98RON.

UK and JDM Classic saloons had the TD05 initially with the TD04 being fitted to JDM SportsWagons.

GC8, i was thinking of if i buy an import to get it mapped for super unleaded, but if a 95 car was built when jap fuel was not 100, why do we read so many threads of jdm lumps popping and going bang etc to bad fuel, is it there bad fuel theory is ***** and they thrashed them ?

not questioning ur knowledge matey, im very inteaged by ur statement, i have my fingers crossed !!!!!!

cheers...

wonder how much a remap would be, might take a lot of petrol to make back the money you'd save instead of just using 97ron/tesco00 or whatever fuel

basically yes you get it mapped so your fuel timeing is right with your boost to put it in simple terms.

JDM Sti engines are different.

JDM WRX are physically the same but with different ECU mapping. Obviously, they changed thorughout the years as the model progressed

As for futher questions on JDM WRX and fuel octane...look, early WRX had 240ps which'll run off anything (within reason), Later ones had 260ps which need super (97RON). And the last ones had 280ps running 100RON - those are the ones that went bang on a routine basis (along with the JDM Sti those all ran 280ps)...I'll say it again - NOT ALL SCOOBS ARE THE SAME! Even if they are all JDM WRXs

Pretty much saved me answering there Ali (I disagree about the 240PS cars running 95RON though; Japanese 'Premium' which theyre designed to run on was about 97-98RON then... 220PS 'Wagons with a small turbo and lower boost might get away with it but I use 98RON because the car is smoother and returns better MPG on 98 making it cheaper!).

I will add though, that the 'Prodrive' ECU for certain Classic Imprezas was simply a C-Series (MY95) 260PS Z4 ECU with a Prodrive sticker on it.....

A, B & C-Series cars will run on SUL; D-Series cars (1997) onwards require 100RON fuel.

'Remap' is a very over-used term; it isnt possible to alter the parameters in early ECUs. The first truly remapable ECU is the ph.1.5 in the MY99 cars; before that you need an APEXi PowerFC (althought the skys the limit with after market ECUs), or a ScoobyECU..... ScoobyECUs made much more sense at £75 than they do now at approaching £600, after fitting and mapping!

I am not a forum know it all however it seems to me that 100RON fuel was available in japan about 10 years before you stated my friend maybe i am wrong of course but this link seems to state that.

Cosmo launching a 100RON product (in July 1986) doesnt mean that Japanese 'Premium Unleaded' was 100RON..... I assure you that Im not mistaken.
