On my 1998 Sti 4 type R, i get this knocking noise from the back on bumpy roads.
I was told to change the anti rollbar bushes,
I`ve just put the two new bushes on but still get the knocking, any ideas?

Also after i`ve unlocked my car with the remote it automatically locks itself again in approx 30 secs. Is this normal?
THANKS.......

Don't know about no.1 (loose exhaust?) but on PTMW! (MY99 UK) if you unlock the car with the fob, but don't open any doors/boot then the alarm automatically re-arms itself after a short period of time - never timed it but 30 secs could be about right. Standard Cat1 Sigma type alarm.

It is definatly not the exhaust, it knocks when the car is off just by pushing down hard at the rear. I`ve had my mate hold the exhaust and look underneath.....
Thanks all the same....

Gaudy,

If it knocks when you are manaully "bouncing" the rear of the car, and it's not the exhaust, it could be a suspension problem.

It might sound stupid, but it's also worth checking:

1. Your car jack and tool kit are secure.
2. The bolts on your boot lid catch aren't loose.

It's probably not these, but I've had similar problems with both - bit annoying at the time, but easily rectified.

Gaudy,

If it's not exhaust or roll-bar links it could be your rear dampers. Various ways to test, such as opening boot and bouncing on boot ledge. If the suspension fails to return promptly then dampers will need changing.

Alternatively, it could be something loose in the back - like the spare wheel or jack?

Gaudy....

Some cars knock when the petrol tank is full as the flot knocks on the top of the tank!

Also there could be a addative in a bottle in the tank?

Boot lid is another one (mine was doing this!)

PS Are you SURE there is no Alarm? What does it say on the remote (My clifford will do what you say your car is doing)

I think subaru NEVER did remote central locking, Prehaps its an aftermarket job?
So are cables that knock on the body work.

IS there a rear wiper on this one, is the motor loose?

About the central locking....if it's a Sigma you've got something called the SUPER LOCKING option turned on....You turn it on and off using the keypad in the car...mines in the glove compartment....

If your remote key fob is black with 2 buttons one lock and one unlock, it is a Japanese remote locking option. It should relock the doors after 20-30 secs only if you don't open the drivers door.
Does the interior light come on when you open the door? The remote box takes its signal from the interior light circuit.

If I were you I would have an alarm fitted anyway (this should overide the locking problem) or the car won't be yours for long!!!
