I've been looking at scoobys for a while now and as the insurance has come down to a level I'm happy with it's almost all systems go. Would like to know your opinions on the following, reliability wise, running costs, etc.

An X reg uk turbo 2000 modified to 300bhp ish (exhaust, filter, intercooler, few engine internals and ecu remap).

or a 96 sti v2 import. Standard.

Both have about 70k on the clock.

Oh and someone told me you have to have the brakes replaced by pros? Is that true as I usually do the brakes on my cars myself. Sorry if that is a question.

Thanks.

Nothing special about the brakes. They are just brakes...

Uk turbo with 300 BHP will be a lot easier to live with as stated. Version 2/ 3 etc STi.... raw... noisy, very heavy on fuel with decat etc...

Id aways opt for Japanese spec tho... early STi engine are to die for.

A lot depends upon your usage tho.. work runner then UK spec is beta with mods, keep gearing etc.

Raw power and experience... Japanese STi

Thanks for the replys.

It would be a daily runner on mostly A roads at the moment. They are askin' £8250 for the uk scooby. Does that sound reasonable?

Buy a standard one for £6000 and do what you want to it yourself if you so desire.

£8250 is a price where someone is trying to get the costs of modding back - those costs are lost forever ...... therefore its £2000 over the top.

Buying standard also means that you are not buying off a Boy Racer (unless any mods have been removed).

My advice would be to buy a UK Standard car, MY00 with 1 Owner from new, 60k miles, with Full History and owned by a mature driver ...... you will then get the best car available at £6000 ....................... then do what you like with it.
