Default Am I the only one with a notchy gearbox?

Funny how you get used to things. After a few weeks off driving the Scoob as I've been commuting in the vRS I went for a spin this evening and the gearbox feels very notchy. Is this a common problem? I'm hoping it's something that different oil can fix so any suggestions?

Cheers!

Mike

i have 02 wrx and its smooth, it was smoother before quickshift.

Not as smooth as previous cars but am assuming it because its 4 wheel drive, maybe/prob wrong though

It's called commuting-itis. I'm the same as you, miles in the vRS, fun in the scoob. I think it's just the difference in cars. The GB in the vRS is super light and easy, chuck it anywhere and it gets in gear, the STi is more precise.

Like chalk and cheese aint they, so different!!

Only found the STi (newage) not to have a notchy gearbox, my classic was notchy.

My WRX is sometimes notchy - but not always. I changed the gearbox fluid at the last service for Millers fully synthetic and this did make a difference. The car is now generally fine, but is parked up most of the time as I only use as a weekend car. Sometimes though, the gears are still a little notchy from cold.

Chalk and cheese is a good description. The vRS is a very decent mile muncher replacement for the Scoob and I've quickly grown to really like it lots. As you say, the gear box in that is super easy, strangely like the 997 (just in GB feel) but after driving it for several weeks hopping in to the Scoob was a shock.

I'll try getting Len at Subaru4you to change the fluids when I have new pads put on in a few weeks and see how that works. I've got mega 126,000 miles on it in just over 3 years so suppose it's fair to expect it to be less good than a new one but thought it would be slacker and not tighter?

Nothing will prize my Scoob off me though, had a BMW trying to keep up in the wet this evening through the twisties and he was all over the place

I use the WRX daily and it's the most notchy gearbox I've ever had, although I consider it as more like positive as all my previous cars felt fluffy by comparison

I've a my99 rb5 with quick shift and it is quite notchy through the box, but reverse is very hard to get into sometimes! (changed the gear oil and has helped but found some big bits of metal on the gear box sump bung magnet!)
