Compared with a conventional engine offering the same output, the TSI powerplant is 20% more efficient, with a combined fuel consumption of 38.2mpg for the 168bhp version.

The 168bhp diesel is a development of the existing 138bhp 2.0-litre TDI, which will continue to be offered. It's more than a second swifter to 62mph, with a time of 8.2sec, and 11mph faster overall at 137mph. Fuel consumption increases 4mpg to 35.8mpg.
Doesn't look right, the diesel would be less efficient than the turbocharged/supercharged engine? I can understand the diesel being faster because it will have greater torque, but less efficient?

It depends on where the power and torque band is on the 1.4, its supercharged so it will have pleanty of low down grunt like the diesel and the turbo will give it high end grunt.. best of both worlds really.
