Default French driving tips.............?

Evening all, the wife and I are taking the kids over to France tomorrow via the portsmouth to Caen ferry.

Has anyone got any useful tips for us while driving over there?

Oh and yes, we are going in the scoob..................complete with Afterburner Vortex bung

We already have the spare bulb kit; maps; hi-vis vets; headlamp converter and triangle. Just looking for any tips for a safer journey.

Many thanx and bon voyage.

Si.

Dont get too carried away with the speed!! The french seem to have gone speed trap mad over the last couple of months.

Watch for the ridiculous "give way to the right rule". If someone pulls up at the give way lines of a side street, they can pull out and you're supposed to give way to them even though you're on the main road. That's how I interpreted it when I was there recently

Don't they have some stupid rule about roundabouts aswell? Something like those wanting to get onto the roundabout have right of way over the ones allready going round? I may be wrong.

Don't get caught speeding, especially over 200 KMH app. about 126 MPH. They will keep you at the side of the road for about 2 Hrs and rush you for app. 1000 euros plus an additional amout for what you were doing over 200 KMH. the first 900 Euro's is to get you to turn up in court, but no one ever does ! Money for old rope !
Stay below 200 KMH !!!!!

If you are cought doing 40 kph over the limit the cops can take your license off you on the spot. Seriously.......they have guns too.

So make sure you have a second driver or your pride and joy will stay parked at the side of the road.

You are more likely to be caught for speeding on the route nationals, if you are going to go quick do it on the Autoroute.
They can work out your average speed and fine you at the toll booth, but in a scoob your average speed will drop as you will have stopped for fuel lots.

Oh and the motorway speed limit drops from 130 kph to 110 kph if its raining

Speed cameras face forwards and backwards and are generally on the free parts of the motorways but are sign posted. Plods with mobiles can be anywhere.

They have radar detector detectors - nasty

GPS systems are wonderfull http://www.alertegps.com/ is a great FREE place click telechargement and then your brand.

The food is great and SUL is cheap
Hey have fun!

That's an urban myth. Never heard of anyone being done like that. (Although I'm sure they could). In any case just use the automated booths where you pay with a card.
