Default POLL - Has the impreza gone to the dogs?

While I still have a sneaky peek at a nice new age I now hardly ever look at a classic. They seem to have gone downhill massively. Halfords bolt on's here, stoopid carbon there. Baseball caps here, 7000rpm in a 30mph limit there.

Now I know some of you have nice cars, but it wont be long and the classic will be just another Saxo / Corsa.

So with that in mind lets have a Poll ...... If I can work out how to do one

Always happens with performance cars when they reach the kind of value that barry can get his first telephone loan for.

It's not fair to say "all" performance cars, it's just the cheap Jap crap.

Anyone got this months Viz, Roger's Profanisaurus:

**** car n A once desirable motor vehicle that has been rendered undesirable as a consequence of its own popularity, eg the Subaru Impreza or the new Minis.
From the fact that like a clematis, 'every ****'s go one'.

yep they will or have got to a price that nova / Corsa boy can get 1

The only saving grace is the cost of insurance (at 22 with a new WRX I never thought I would be saying that )

Since when has the cost of insurance stopped a nipper from buying a car? ... Never as far as I'm concerned.....

Yep theyve totally lost it now unfortunately

Classics only get respect from chav's and Nova drivers now. You can pick up early WRX's for banger money now, and lets face it - in many peoples eyes they are no more than chavved up old bangers with a big exhaust.

I was posting on another (non-car related) forum a few weeks back, and someone mentioned buying a car, and after suggesting a Subaru, others were replying with "will that one come with a free tracksuit and baseball cap?!"

I think a lot of people would be embarrassed to be seen in a scooby now, the image is so bad

My Insurance was 5k when I got mine at 18. I didn't care how much it was, and just took the TV & anything I could get my hands on down to cash convertors to fund it

But yep, the scene has completely changed over the years, and it's not been for the better.

I didn't buy mine because I wanted to look good and pose in it, hence why it still looks like this

For relatively cheap thrills, there's not much that comes close, so my money's gone under the bonnet.

I'm happy with it so who cares?

IMHO classic Imprezas are suffering the same problem that 205GTIs and R5GTTs went through during the end of the 90s. Lots of tat and very few good ones. Now though, if you see one on the road chances are its a goodun and well looked after.

The Saph Cosworth went the same way during this time and now all the ****ters have gone and its nearly all minters or at least enthusiasts.

Personally, unless I can afford some kind of JDM New Age Spec C I'm quite happy to stick with my classic. Eventually all the cheapy stuff will be written off or whatever and the enthusiast cars will come out on top.

Least thats what I keep telling myself.

as you say, a classic that has run into halfords window is leaning towards the saxo of the future but as far as the standard classic goes its far from dead.!

Too many cheap scoobs around now!!! Too many car supermarkets selling scoobs now! Too many chavs own scoobs now. That's why I moved over to evo's, They limit each model to around 5k. Hence a rarer sight on the road.
dave.........................IMHO of course.

All sounds like snobbery to me!

I look at mine as fast, reliable and capable of towing my caravan!

It's only a car. Not a fashion accessory.

IF the classic impreza is considered by some to be a chav car, does that mean the saloons or the wagons. or both?

All cars depreciate to the point where they are in reach of the barry boys... You see plenty of big rimmed, blacked out BMW's, Audi A4's etc rolling around but that's doesn't reflect the ownership of the whole marque.

What's happening the classic is exactly what happened with Ford RS Turbo's and XR3is. Now though the only one's left are mint and well cared for and driven by real enthusiasts. As said above, same will happen with the classic, but at the moment it is no suprise to see Barry, Trev and their mates with them. If you don't like it - only option is to move on.

The new car's don't have a bad image, but then when was an Impreza the car to buy for those reasons? It's not subtle or classy and never will be. Keep attacking the road and forget about image IMHO.

It has to be said that up until Chrsitmas this year, I was 150% pro-Scoob.

Then something happened. I was walking out of work to the shop, and WRX chaviot came passed with a sewage pipe-sized Jap exhaust.
It has to be said, I was quite embarrassed.......

As you say, time to move on. So I did - however, not just because of that. My lifestyle changed and required my having a larger car with a hatch.
Subaru don't do a new-shape STI

Don't get me wrong though - I still love Scoobies, especially some, if not most of the very fine examples shown on this and related sites. You guys keep the flame burning bright.

But after 6 weeks of owning an Audi S4 Avant, I can't see myself back in a Subaru for a very long time, although I do miss my Scoobysport exhaust note....

Dan (ex-MY99 UK owner - one of the nicer examples )

A car dealer friend of mine once said:

"Before a car becomes a classic, it becomes cheap"

It's a performance Icon, and always will be, regardless of who ends up with them. You can't blame a car for the person who drives it! It is a shame to see them fall into the wrong hands, but it makes it even more of a privilage to own an immaculate one. I see it as a natural degenerative process for any car that makes a mark as being fast and relatively cheap. The worst ones get written off or die of natural causes and best ones get though the "cheap period" and then appreciate in reputation and value.

IMHO, all this crap about classics having a bad image. You **** need to GET A LIFE , who cares what kind of people drive them each car is individual to the owner. Just because some people cant afford to buy a new one doesn't make them any less of an enthusiast.
