Hi Rob,

I'm currently in on the look out for a Scoob at something like a decent price and as far as I can see it depends upon where you want to get one from.

If you buy one from a main dealer then £10k will probably get you anything up to a 96N (i.e pre-face lift) with about 65k+ on the clock.

If you want to buy privately then you could get anything up to a MY97 with 60k+ on it. The same money would probably get you a newer Jap WRX with lower mileage, if you changed your mind !!

It is such a grey area though, most people are convinced that values are dropping like stone and price their cars accordingly, others seem to want silly money and cling to the past when Scoob values didn't budge... at the same time, you worry about the life a car may have lead if the value is lower !? Its a complete bu99er !!

Personally I'd like to go down the dealer route so at least I would have some sort of warranty and back up if I encountered any probs.

£10k should easily get you a mint MY94/95 with low mileage, if you can find one.

Of course, Whites and dark green micas seem to be cheaper too..

Good luck !!

On the insurance note, the premium you have at £1790 with your driving record, age and garaging post code does look very good !! I would like to help but unfortunately we don't use an insurer that would cover and Impreza driver under 25 years of age !

As for tracking systems, the majority of insurers insist upon them nowadays due to making big losses on Scoobs that have gone missing in the past, never to be seen again. Personally I think they are a good idea and whilst its a pain forking out for one they do reduce the chance of the scumbags getting very far with your car and shorten the time they have to do anything to it. Also, it increases the chance of them being caught. I'd personally recommend NavTrak Proactive (£470 plus monitoring) or RAC Trackstar.. Have a look at "www.NavTrak.com" and "www.ractrackstar.com" for info..

Hope you get one sorted...

Cheers,

John

I am also looking for a Scooby for a birthday present for my self. Am looking to spend about £10,000 and insurance is all right (well as much as it can be). As I am on 20 a £10,000 car with a CAT1 alarm/immobiliser and tracker my quote was £2000 through Quote Line Direct (www.quotelinedirect.co.uk/main/index.asp). I pay £1000 at the moment on my Nova (go on start with the comments about nova owners ) but Scooby’s are just lovely cars. A lot of people are telling me to avoid such a powerful car at my young tender age but if I pay £10,000 for a car I am not going to drive like a loon and wrap it around a tree!
My local Subaru dealer has some Impreza's in my price range but I am yet to take one for a test drive.

I would recommend (like others have said) checking with local dealers. I think when buy from a dealer you get 3 years warranty.

The insurance quote sounds pretty good.

As for buying, there is an oversupply of scoobs at the moment due to imports. There are so many for sale that you should always bid a lot lower than the asking price, they may turn you down but just wait a couple of weeks then call back when they haven't sold it and ask if they are still interested because another has come up and you'll buy that instead if they don't drop the price heavily.

As for condition, one of the problems with these cars is that a lot of people don't warm them up properly before a blast or let them cool down after one. This seriously reduces the life of the turbo. So don't say anything, just get the owner to drive it, and if he boots it up to the redline after 20 seconds, walk away. A good car's owner will tell you about needing to warm up and cool down, and will wait at least a few minutes from cold before booting it, and give 1 minute of cooling down before turning off the engine (driving at low revs for a couple of minutes is equivalent to cooling down).

Another thing which is a big bonus is if the owner has changed the oil frequently. Ideally you want to see oil changes every 4000 miles or less, but anyone who changes the oil more often than the car service intervals is someone who is more likely to have looked after the car.

Don't go for any cars with serious crash damage (car park dings etc are ok), there are plenty of good cars out there so what's the point? Also try to get the car inspected by a Subaru specialist or dealer, they will be able to flag any impending problems for you.

Good luck, just make sure you are patient and thorough, wait for the right car, then haggle hard for the right price. Then go out and enjoy the bloody thing!
