Default Scooby newbie - at last - with questions

Hi people!

After 10 years of hot hatches (R5GTT, Mk1 Golf Gti, 205 1.9GTi, Clio Williams and 172 Cup and Civic Type-R) I have turned 30 and finally seen the light. After years of hankering after a Scooby I have finally got my hands on one!

It's a 1999 Dark Green Mica Turbo with Prodrive handling pack (ARBs, Bilstein/eibach susp and 17" ST2's in Gold) and the Prodrive body enhancements (colour-coded everything and PIAA driving lights (unfortunately the guy that had it all fitted didn't want the WR rear spoiler so opted out of that!(best find one at some point I guess.))) It's also go A/C and sunroof and was at a big dealer with warranty so I couldn't resist!
Will post pics when I get time.

My first mods are going on this w/e:

Crystal Side repeaters and front indicators,
a MOMO **** and
a better stereo.

Here is my question:

In the performance/engine stakes I want to release a bit more oomph and obviously get some more burble, I am therefore planning a Green/TSL panel filter and a H&S or Magnex or preferably Prodrive exhaust.

If I fit these will I, like I have read in a few places, need to sort the ECU straight away?

Cheers for now

Hi Dean and welcome!
A filter and backbox change will not necessitate an ECU update.
Sounds like you've got a lovely spec car.
A stereo upgrade is a must - the standard front speakers and headunit are utter pap.
If you're going to increase bhp, you're going to have to do something about the brakes first - braided lines with some better pads (e.g. Pagid Blue) would be a good start.
Enjoy your Scooby, and enjoy ScoobyNet!

Welcome aboard.

By all means change the stereo and exhaust backabox (suggest you check out H&S for the latter) but then get used to the car before modifying it; you'll then be able to make an informed contribution to the cars development and won't break the bank!!!

I agree that speed mods will wait a while, financial reasons mainly!(I have opened my account at the local Shell garage )

The brakes already have braided hoses and feel far better than those in either the Cup or the Civic I have owned - does everyone agree on the Pagid Blues?

What effects on the fuel economy will filter/exhaust/future ECU have (will get a sound thrashing off the Mrs if the economy goes down any more! )

......should I leave the wheels gold or go for a high power silver, what about a subtle sub/amp install (I've had stereos that loosened rear number plates and interior mirrors in my youth), or maybe a bigger front lip.................oh dear, this is gonna be an expensive relationship!! AND I've only had it two weeks.....

Changing filter/exhaust/ECU etc. shouldn't make a lot of difference to your fuel economy - if at all.

I recently bought a MY00, with Magnex centre decat and 6x4 oval backbox as the only mods.

A month later on, and I had changed filter, downpipe and remapped via Ecutek Tek3 (amongst other things!) - all of which raised bhp from standard 215 to 272.

Pics and write up here:

Have not noticed any difference in mpg.

Noticed a huggggeee difference in the way it drives tho....

Oh, I bought a JR filter btw. Had a Green on my last scoob. Both good. A lot of people like the K&N and the STi so take your pick!
