But........

A new emission band has been introduced for vehicles newly registered from 23rd March 2006. Band G will encompass CO2 emissions figures 226 g/km and above.

So its only for new cars bought from tomorrow onwards

cos even a WRX non-sti pumps out about 244 CO2 thingy units

My V5 for my 2001 WRX UK300 says 0.700 g/km.
So does this mean I'm a winner or , as I suspect I'm reading it wrong.

Dec 01 bugeye shows 242g/km on the V5, so a bigger than normal hike, but not the biggun, i'd have been really p!ssed if it had hit the big time as I've only had it 3 weeks

How come £5 is £15 in real terms? Even higher rate tax + NI will only (roughly) double the costs.

All the paper and news reports I've seen so far makes no mention that the new G band applies to new vehicles (23 March on) so a lot of people are worrying for no reason. Having said that, they will still need to cough up an extra £20 next time!
My 03 STi is rated at 265g/km which puts it firmly in the worst category. Anyone in the process of buying one now will have to pay £210

I think this is what they use to decide your tax group
http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/
Interesting that the 2006 WRX and STI are both over the 225 limit but both are euro IV cars which get a tax break. Wonder which one they will charge you (bet it's the fcukin most expensive).

Insterestingly, they have a noise section on here too, I wonder if they can use that to tell you your Blitz is a tad on the loud side?

Yep confirms what my V5 says - MY05 WRX is 219g/km

As I recommend an unreg MY05, slap PPP on it... stealth STI, lower VED.

Wouldn't mind paying the extra money if they actually spent it on the roads instead of pouring most of it down the drain...to$$ers.

Think you have hit the nail on the head. If the government could stand up and show - ie physical evidence - Where their extra taxes where spent, less people would think of them as the lying to$$ers they are !

Sh1te Brown's budgets never stack up and are always flawed. This govt must be the worst I have known for taxing the general public. I thought Denis Healey "taxed us until the pips squeaked" as he put it but this b@stard squeezing us dry.

For those who are confused......
Cars registered before March 2001 will be at the old fixed rates, so thats now £170 (up from £165) for a year on a car over 1.5 litre

Cars registered upto 23rd March 2006 will be in the same bands they were in, but slightly revised rates for those bands.

Cars registered from 23rd March 2006 will be in the same bands except for those which produce more than 225g/km CO2 which are in the new highest bracket.

Its not likely, remember people vote on how they are doing and at the moment the country on a whole (yes i know there are bad bits) is doing well.
Take a look at some other euro countries and we are far better off (income per head) than anywhere else.

The problem is there is no real competiton at the moment which isn't good. People will vote labour again if it carries on, after all people are living in more expensive properties, driving better cars etc etc so why would you risk changing that?. How many new Porsches, Range Rovers, X5's etc do you see about now to say 10 years ago (similar priced cars etc.) bloody loads of them.
People will not vote for another party unless their own lives are affected a great deal and at this point in time it aint going to happen. We can now look forward to more tax rises every year because of it... great!

The real problem is that the only reason we're "doing well" at the moment is that the govenment is borrowing at stupid levels. I could "do well" this year by borrowing and mortgaging lots, get bigger house, new type 25, etc etc. Problem is thar after a while, the interest payments become crippling, and you ultimately have to pay for it all. The national debt was actually falling noticably during the long Tory term, but having got into a stronger financial position as a result, the government is b8ggering it all up again. Not to worry, by the time everything hits the fan, it will be after the next election and they can blame their replacements again

I'm far from a green but I don't have a problem in the government trying to make people think about the efficiency of the cars that they buy. Hopefully manufacturers will improve efficiency as a result of ours and other governments actions. For most of us this hike isn't that much in the scheme of things, I must be one of the worst polluters doing 40,000 scooby miles a year though i'm geting a Fabia vRS this weekend for the weekly commute to cut costs.

My problem with the government is that you can buy funky and pretty cheap wind turbines to stick on your roof that save roughly 10% of the household emissions so why are they not spendig this extra levy on cars in subsidising this sort of constructive CO2 reduction for people that do something positive?

cos if you tak it every six months the £5 increase gets lumped in with the admin charge for 6 months, so you pay it twice, hence the £15

Totally agree but the average joe doesn't care about national debt, just that they have more money to spend on 'nice' things. People who think about things a little more realise the bubble could burst quite quick so don't over lend, many others are setting themselves up for big falls but until that day they will vote for a Party who give them those 'nice' things.

We need a party to challenge Labour for all our benefits, it would stop all these stealth taxes etc etc. but the Tory party just doesn't cut the mustard at the moment. Its like Chelsea v Mid table team and i can't see it changing for a while, which isn't good for anyone really.
