Cool 911 faster than a Scoob horror!!!

Was at Brunters today with Don Palmer and passengered three cars.

911 GT3 Mk II

MY06 Spec C (running about 350bhp)

M3 Cab (current shape)

The 911 was fabulous - so quick!! Amazing handling and endless smooth power. The quickest car on the day.

The Spec C was a close second but would never catch the 911. It just did not have the finesse although extremes of handling were far more accessable - 100yard drifts take a lot of practice in a 911 . Still an amazing car - but the GT3 really is in a different (three times the price) league.

The M3 Cab was way slower than either. Fun but slower.

So in future you don't need to bother with which is faster, a Scoob, an M3 or a 911. You heard it here first, tested in scientific conditions

theres a big difference between a 911 C2 an a 911 GT3. The GT3 is a much more focused track weapon, especially in RS form

not suprised the GT3 was quicker.

It's ironic that if this thread had a title of "Which is faster a 911, Scoob or an M3?" there would now be seventeen pages of inconclusive opinionated drivel about road v. track, tyres, the 'Ring, driver ability, the colour of the car, the last girl you had sex with (with or without a staple in her midriff) , Optimax v. Ultimate...

...and yet faced with some facts the Scooby majority are silent

There's a big difference between most scoobs and a 350bhp MY06 Spec C. The Spec C is a much more focused track weapon, particularly in 350bhp form.

Not surprised it still couldn't beat the Porsche

p.s. on a serious note - Rannoch, I'm jealous of your scientific tests. I do some genuinely scientific tests on occassions, they never seem to be as much fun as you'll have had

As the owner of an old 911 and an old Sti v3, and a driver of both on a track I know well the Sti is miles quicker than my 911.

The new 911's are not 'car of the year' for no good reason, they simply are the best, but that engineering comes at the price.
Nothing wrong with that.

It all comes to the cost to manufacture and develop etc, so the better test is not one based on stiring up fever amongst the camps, but one based on cost.

That is why Sti v EVO is right.
911 v Noble
Cooper S v SEAT Cupra etc.

Anyway, sounds like a great day out and certainly better than the 11 hour one I've just done!

Graham.

G,

there were no selection criteria other than we were all random customers of Don's ability.

Although there are plenty of threads on here comparing the performance.

The engineering shows through though. The GT3 and the Spec C have pretty much the same power to weight - and the 911 was faster simply with a better chassis. It also FELT faster on acceleration although the clocks indicated it was a very close run thing with use both getting to the first corner at 110mph - but the Scoob had to be pushed just a tad harder to do it.

On the day the Scoob was easiest to be fastest with limited talent - much harder to master the powerslides in the GT3.

My 993 was the same - very similar performance figures to my Sti V - but the STi was miles quicker in my inexpert hands on track.

The smilies may have given away that I wasn't completely serious, but my point is that the GT3 is a well sorted, fast 911, and the spec C is a well sorted, fast Scoob:- so we're comparing like for like here, and the Porsche apparently won.

Doesn't change my other post, I'd still have like to be involved in that kind of experiment, purely to further science, you understand!

So what is there to be ashamed of in not being quite as fast as a 911 GT3 ?

How much is each of these cars new? If you spent the difference on modding the Impreza what would be quicker then?

A standard 997 not GT3 will drive away from a scoob of circa 330bhp on a track. Its happened to me and no matter how well I knew the track or how fast I went I couldnt stop it happening...... They have superior brakes, superior turn in and superior corner exit speeds...The scoob is good in a straight line but cant keep up when it gets bendy.

Just my two pennith worth.....

The 911 started life in 1965.
The 997 arrived from those distant roots in 2005.

That is 40 years of revolution and evolution, what other vehicle has that family line?
No wonder it is the best.

Standard or Carrera S?

The standard is slower round 'Ring (only just) than the Spec C.

The S is almost as fast as the old GT3!!

You weren't also both overtaken by Phil Bennett in a standard Rover Metro GTi by any chance?

(and in case someone else doesn't understand, that's me kidding. The driver does make a huge difference on the track, but rumour has it that Gary is a decent driver)

It was a fair while back and I dont think the S was out at the time ...... The brakes and cornering ability is something else, even in std form.

I have been out in a couple of GT3's both modded for more power and can honestly say i **** myself the speed these things arrive at corners at. The amount of speed they scrub off so quickly and how pointy they are round the corners themselves is amazing....The acceleration is progressive and monotonous but its the other stuff the cars do so damned well that needs to be seen to be believed.

I used to be a real hater of 911's just didn't do it for me and hated the sound ..... My opinion has very much changed now.

Are you guys talking about the GT3 or the GT3RS?

The GT3's seem to be at reasonable money these days for what they are.

Originally I was talking about a std 997 driving away from me, not the 'S' model.. Then I was talking about pax laps in GT3's ..... Not GT3 RS's.

Evo times at Bedford West: "997 was 88.85, 997 S Sport was 84.60, 996TT was 86.00, STi 86.10"

Not all on the same day. Obviously the GT3 RS is a completely different kettle of fish, but the STi holds up quite well in these figures.

Thumbs up

Three Scoobs, a M3, a M3 CSL, and two 911 turbo's has been my journey to a 911 GT3 RS.

The GT3 RS is the ONLY car I've EVER been 100% Happy with. It's the best machine ever and makes me smile every time I drive it.

Lets hope they do the same with the 997 GT3 RS

You can't beat scooby's on value for money, pound for pound they beat Porsche's.

Even if I won the lottery I'd still have a spec C (or equivalent) in my 'fleet' of cars

Being behind the wheel of a GT3 RS is a very special place to be, and when you hit some lovely B roads the money paid is irrelevant to the adrenalin rush and smile planted on your face.
