nitrogen filled tyres
after getting a nail in my yoko at work. me and my mate who i live with who works for ats went over to his workshop to plug the tyre.
while we were there we refilled all the tyres with nitrogen.
any1 else had this done?
ive noticed straight away that the car feels more stable round corners.also been told that it can reduce fuel consumption.
any1 had any experience with nitrogen filled tyres?

Nitrogen is inert
Back in my a/c days when the van had a puncture (and someone nicked the spare ) we kept topping it up with nitrogen
We did use R22 once (ran out of nitrogen) - but shhhh, don't tell anyone Not too clever either as it expands more when it heats up
Couldn't tell the difference, but the tracking was a mile out. And it dropping on to 2 cylinders on the motorway was more of a concern than checking the fuel consumption

The only thing it does is remove the imperfections in normal atmospheric air that can break down the rubber.
It probably grips more because it was blown to the correct pressure!

its something to do with the moisture in air i think, with nitrogen there isn't any moisture so it's more constant as the temperature changes? it's something like that anyway, they used it in F1 for years before it was ever heard about on the streets. Not sure if they still use it in F1 though, as i guess there is probably something better by now?

When I had the scoob my tyres were nitrogen inflated at Selectatyre.
Here's some info on it from another site

Oxygen molicules are larger than nitrogen. So that covers 98% of the air
It's do do with coeficient of expansion (nothing to do with spelling), tyres generate heat from the road, in a race car tire pressures are more important and temperatures can vary a lot, so using nitrogen is an advantage.
Not any point though if quick fit are trying to rob you of 10quid a tyre or the like.

As already stated, you use nitrogen because it has no water content, its the water content in the air that causes the change in tyre presure with heat.
On a race tyre you fit it and blow it up to seat it with air, then run a vacuum pump on it to suck all the air/mositure out, then re-inflate with Nitrogen.
Complete waste of money on a road car IMHO.

John, doesn't it eliminate inconsistant change in tyre pressure that you get with air of differing humidity, I'm sure tyre pressures increase when Nitrogen filled tyres heat up. Sorry to be pedantic

Silly question, but where would you go to do your weekly tyre pressure checks? If the pressures have dropped a little over time do you just top it up with air or do you have to go back and have them put Nitrogen in it again?

Its a complete waste of money when i take my mum to Big City Tyres for a puncture repair, on a ******* L reg Mondeo, and she gets charged a "Nitrogen Inflation Premium", FFS, i mean, what the **** is that?
Rip off *****. Taking the **** if you ask me, charging to inflate a tyre.

Errrrm . .
Have you perhaps considered filling your tyres with helium! . . .You see . .That way you might finally start working as a part-time comedian, as you may inhale from them and start speaking in a silly voice . . .
Or even better you can impress the birds by filling baloons from your tire!
Enjoy!

As long as you fill the tyres with an airline with a water trap in it, you can use plain air in race tyres and get consistent results. You just get a larger initial presure increase on the first couple of laps, than you would with nitrogen. So long as you know what that change will be, using air isnt a problem, after the warm up lap you only see a couple of PSI diference in the first two laps, and that slightly lower initial presure helps generate heat in the tyre surface quicker, so the performance loss is very small in reality.

Not that I'd EVER go to one of those places anyway.
A quickfit mechanic told someone I know that you could change the timing belt on a fiesta zetec while it was running. Just cut the belt with a knife and pop the new one on
