Default How will Subaru regain a cult status?

The current round of visual changes to the impreza seem to put the final nail in the coffin, especially the rear end of it. How can subaru revive its fortunes and make the impreza a serious proposition and not the joke it has become?

My feelings are that the scoop should go, WR blue should go, gold wheels should go, outrageous spoilers should go (optional if you really feel the need) the engine needs to be a 3 litre turbocharged unit and it should weigh ideally around 1,200-1300kg, optional 2 door and maybe a system where you can turn the 4 wheel drive off, ie on a motorway and just have rear wheel drive? ( no idea if this is practical!!) Flappy paddle gearbox?!

Above all, get a decent designer in (for the interior as well), something understated but menacing would be ideal, who-ever designed the current car should seriously be out of a job.

Any other ideas, or am I talking rubbish !?

The UK should take up Japans answer and scrap all cars over 3yrs old. That way the boy-racers can't afford the car and it's kept to limited numbers for those that can afford them

Getting rid of the scoop's unlikely. I can't see FMIC's being fitted as standard

How about start making classic Imprezas again? I have an MY00 and really don't know what to buy next as the new age ones don't do much for me.

Its great, the fact that not everyone wants one now has brought the price down and it also means not every other bugger on the road has got one!

I know what you're saying, but if they don't need to do, they're not going to.
Plus, the scoop is one of the car's defining features

The scoop is a major weak point on the car I think, almost an interboiler !
Any new car design is instantly ruined by its presence.

I think that impreza's are on the decline.... i wouldnt buy another.... why buy a car (MY06 STI) that Evo rate the same as a fecking Vectra???? And the depreciation is chronic.

The car hasnt changed for last 5 years bar headlights (oh yes that new suspension and DCCD makes lots of difference.... NOT).

It STILL understeers to ****....

and STILL goes slower than the Evo just about everywhere...

RIP Subaru IMHO

Be interesting to see what the MY07 car will be like....

Maybe if they could regain some of their lost form in the WRC it might help strengthen their image.

I heard somewhere that prodrive have returned to using TMIC on their wrc cars, as for the speed that you do round a rally course a TMIC is more efficient, due to less lag etc. The TMIC becomes less efficient over 100 mph, due to the air going straight over the scoop instead of in it, and this is where the FMIC comes into its own, this is why a scoob feels a bit breathless at over 100mph IMHO, but for acceleration off the lights there aren't many cars that will touch it.
I just remember where the heritage of Subaus lies, its in good handling and speed out of corners that they excel at.
If you want a fast top end car buy an M5 or something like that.

I absolutely LOVE my scoob for its looks and for that grin factor I get when i get the back end out on the roundabouts ( when there is no one else about ), and for the friendliness (in general) of the other owners.
For me its a package that can't be bettered by any other car ATM.

Erm, could you be more wrong dude? It was as quick as an Evo around a track (which is where the Evo is supposed to be at an advantage), AND this wasn't even one that was on the same par power wise, so methinks the suspension and DCCD does not make **** all difference! The Vetra was deemed to be not far behind THEM ALL, not just the Subaru!!

Oh, and its only taken the mainstream 10 years to make a performance car that's not far beind the Scoobies and Evos.....so well done VXR!!

Lets all wait and see what the next generation brings untill we give Subaru the last rites shall we. For now, apart from the asthetics, Subaru is still very much at the top of the game!

Honestly.....

Same way they built a cult followuing in the 90's.

Subaru need a car for £20k which will blow away the average top of the range family saloon and rival super car performance.

Family saloons have got a lot faster since then and so have supercars - Scoobies have satyed about the same so not that special compared to the ordainary run of the mill now.

I think the new car my06 is ugly. (IF I WANTED A SEAT ID BUY ONE) Front end anyone??? As for the fmic I dont really see why there carnt be one as standared as every one knows the tmic suffers heat soak. Maybe making the tmic in to a charge cooler??

Also you say the friendleyness of other owners I own a classic, Is it me or do a lot of the new age owners never wave, flash or do anything???? when you pass them. Dont get me wrong a few do!!!
For the car to be a cult icon I think the owners need to stick together and respect each other as no one else will, as you keep hearing the car is now regarded as chav by some.

Just a couple of thoughts iv had.

Its unfair to compare an evo to a standard wrx, as there's about a £10k price difference.

The first thing they need to do is stop changing the design. If you relaunch the car every couple of years, depreciation on the old models becomes horrific. Look at the likes of BMW and Lexus. They keep models for as long as possible and as a result, the resale values stay high.

The next thing is to get a decent designer in. Lets face it, if you want it to look good, go to Italy. Imagine something that looked like a 156/159 inside and out but went like a scooby. Better still, a Brera with AWD and a proper exhaust note.

I've got a bug eye and ALWAYS wave to any other Subaru, and yes, it can get a little frustrating at times, but when you get a wave where someone sticks their arm out of the window and everyone else in your traffic jam realises that there is some kind of unspoken bond between you, it makes it worth it. Please don't tar ALL of us newage drivers with the same brush, its usually corporate types who don't want to acknowledge you, purely because of the 'I'm a big businessman, how could that 25 year old little **** own the same car as me' thing that happens to Porsche owners as well!

I think you are talking about a car that would cost in excess of 30k which is not what the subaru is meant to be. Get an AUDI or a porker if you want blistering performance/gadgets/interior and gay boy styling.

It needn't be. So are you saying the reason they are cheap is because they get a work experience bod to design it?
