Any spoiler (or in this case mostly wing) has an effect at all speeds, its just that its effect increases with speed. For a wing in clean airflow (so not on the back of a car!) it increases with roughly with the cube of speed (double speed = 8x downforce), mind you, so does its drag!

On a road car you want balanced aero at all speeds. Too much downforce or lift at either end gives strange and sometimes dangerous handling at high speed. Too much rear downforce at the rear will make the understeer at high speed which is fine until it's that bad that the car lowers itself too far and bottoms out or the wind gets under the front of it.
For a road car we trim the rear spoiler to give a small amount of downforce at speed bearing in mind that the shape of the body on most cars will give lift, hence they feel unstable at speed.
If you watch the rally car, quite often you'll see it fly nose up, sometimes to the point that it looks like it'll do a back flip. Richard had a huge moment in Australia (I think!) one year over a particularly fast jump for just this reason. This was because the spoiler gives huge downforce but the front lip stops working at higher rideheights, particularly when the wheels are off the floor.

Oh and a last question....
when designing the car (as in the classic to bugeye transistion) did prodrive set any parameters for the car design? As in weight, torsional strength, length, height etc and all the other car technical specs? And (i presume you did) how far did you go in that design?
What about the aero and cooling packages? Who designed the final kit? Prodrive? Subaru or a 3rd party? Unlike mitsibushi ()was aethestics part of the requirments?

All due respect to pete, but the latest WRC ones (which I have the pictures for - not sure about all in that style) have a much bigger angle of attack on the wing, so I'm guessing thats a copy made for road use?

Very silly question but i love these spoilers.
I may be saying a very dangerous thing here but would they fit on a classic?
Does anyone have any pics of one that has been put on there to either persuade or make me see sense
I sense i will be shunned from the world now for that comment

Wanted to re-activate this thread. If Pete Warburton still posts here or if anyone else has a WRC replica rear spoiler like the previous pics of Pete's car can you please advise where you purchased it & how much it cost?
Also, what material was it made from e.g. FRP, etc and any problems with flexing / paint cracking?
Any regrets about fitting it? i.e Rear view, handling, etc
Cheers

If I remember this correctly, Pete bought the spoiler from someone in Scotland called Gumball.
And Gumball bought it from drmotorsport who had it on one of their own cars as a development spoiler.
I don't think Gumball has a Subaru anymore or where he is about.
