Which Scooby??
Hello - New to this forum - But looks good!!
Been looking for an impreza for a several months now.
I've seen two cars this week on the internet which are suitable.
Same Car, Same colour etc..
Car 1 (10 Miles away)
X Reg 27k with FSSH (Only 6 Stamps) Cambelt hasn't been changed (Owner said it wasn't due till 60k) Comes with 8 months subaru Warranty, No Tracker.
Car 2 (100 Miles away)
X Reg 49k with FSSH Brakes, Tyres and cambelt recently changed (Within last year), Tracker
Car 1 is about £500 more than car 2.
Car 1 is attractive but I think it needs a new cambelt and I think the warranty would be invalid as it hasn't been changed yet??
I would need a tracker for insurance purposes which car 2 already has.
Which one would you go for?

I'd go for car 2 as it's had new tyres and cambelt recently. Also has a tracker already so thats worth £300 at least. The mileage on car 2 isn't OTT and I'd be concerned with a car thats 6-7 years old with such a low mileage like car 1 as if it's only done short runs then the engine won't be in the best of states.

Car 1 didn't have the belt done because that service costs £650!! (well, it did me!)
The Cambelt needs replacing on a milegae OR a time basis ......

Car 1 doesnt require a cam-belt, as far as im aware, till at least double that mileage...!!! - there are also companies out there that dont require a tracker - so id go for that one ,especially since its not far away...
gawd its *even* got a warranty from subaru.

I realise car 1 doesn't need a cambelt change for mileage reason, but I was of the understanding that it should be either 36 months / 45k for MY99 or 48 months / 60k for MY00.
The seller believes that the warranty should be valid as he's followed the garage's advice.
Insurance wise I'm 10 months in - I've only got 1 years no claims at the moment - To change companies now just to get round a tracker doesn't make financial sense - Best quote without a tracker was £1250!!

If no 1s been left in a garage and not really driven that much, like mine was, then you could be getting a very good car and won't loose your shirt in depreciation quite as much as you would with the second car. HOWEVER, you'd need to budget for a FULL inspection and then a cambelt service as soon as you got the car to be safe. I'd also look into whether that warranty was worth the paper its printed on owing to the cambelt issue.

I am sure this is to do with age as well as miles, the belts do suffer from aging - not grey hairs exactly but can get fragile/brittle.

Car one doesnt have a full service history if it only has 6 stamps. they are supposed to be serviced every 6 months and since its over five years old it should have 10 stamps at least.
Also cambelt should have been changed at 48 months as previously stated.

the belt should have been changed on car 1, when i bought my old MY99 it had only done 24000 but was due a belt cos it was nearly 3 years old so i had one fitted, at the dealer it cost £102 for the belt and £88 for them to fit it. if you read the service book it clearly states its mileage or time whichever is sooner so really car 1 is due its 2nd belt and it hasn't even had its 1st in nearly 6 years.

I still cant believe that there are people out there that maybe dont do high mileages but are still happy to service their cars by mileage rather than mileage/time.
People are happy to spend relatively high amounts on a high performance car and, in some cases, large amounts on modding them .... but still try to scrimp on servicing!!
The service intervals on Imprezas are clearly laid down in black and white and not open to personal interpretation.
Classics must be serviced every 6 months or 7500 miles .... WHICHEVER HAPPENS SOONEST .... NOT EITHER OR!!
.... and the cam belt changed every 3 years/45K miles on pre MY00 cars .... 4 years/60K miles on MY00 cars .... no matter how low the miles!
Rant over!
