dead scoob
Well after a week of ownership and 600kms my 98 sti is dead! I was heading up to the shops a few miles from my house and heard a slight knocking sound like something stuck in the tire (nail, stone etc) well got to the shop and the sound went away. On the way home the sound got worse so i pulled in and noticed that the sound was there at idle. I drove the car the rest of the way home and noticed an irratic vacume and a very high oil temp, a few meters away from my house the car just died so i didnt restart it, just pushed it up to the driveway. I tried to start it when it was cold but no joy!!!! do any ideas what mite of killed my scoob?

Sorry to hear of your bad fortune mate.
Yep, sounds like the big ends have gone. Speak to David at API mate.
Warning: if it is the big ends, it's going to hurt. 2.5k seems to be a common ballpark figure in these instances.

What petrol have you been running it on?
Optimax / Tesco 99 RON + Octane booster or is it mapped for UK fuel? If not lots of detonation and ultimately a dead engine. Have you got a KnockLink fitted and was it showing any activity before the engine went?
Of course you knew all this stuff from researching SNet before buying a JDM import?

that doesnt sound good at all! It was run on 98 octane fuel along with silkolene octane booster, I have had imports for years, I imported the car to Ireland myself so no one is to blame but me. The car was checked by myself and a mate when we did all the belts alond with a water pump and it was fine. I have been informed though that the oil pump mite have been the cause of the trouble?

I think oil pump failures are fairly rare, but is there is a known issue with them, I think one of the first thing RCM recommend is a modified pump for imported STis. It's not so much that its uprated, but I think its not as prone to the fault that can occur with the OEM part.
Get on the blower to David at APi mate.

no top speed runs whatsoever ther fastest the car was driven was 140kmh at most, yes the oil and coolant were both changed along with all the belts and water pump aswell as thermostat.
