From bbc.co.uk
Four-time World Rally champion Tommi Makinen has joined Subaru on a two-year contract from Mitsubishi.
The Finnish star was set to join Citroen, but Subaru - who look set to lose Richard Burns to Peugeot - made Makinen an offer he could not refuse.
"I felt it was time for a change, and I'm delighted that Subaru has given me this fantastic opportunity," said Makinen, who shares the joint overall lead in this year's world championship with Colin McRae.
"The team has a clear concept of how to win the WRC, and I'm proud that I'm going to be to be part of that.
When Tommi joins us next season the sky is the limit on what we can achieve as a team
Subaru spokesman David Lapworrth
"I have a lot of respect for Subaru and I am really looking forward to working with everyone there."
Subaru were clearly delighted to have secured the services of the 37-year-old, who has won the world championship with Ford and Mitsubishi.
"No driver even comes close to matching Tommi's record of achievements over the last five years," said spokesman David Lapworth.
"When he joins us next season the sky is the limit on what we can achieve as a team.
"Tommi will be the perfect team leader and it will be our primary goal to make him World Champion in 2002."
Makinen's departure could pave the way for either Carlos Sainz or Marco Martin to replace him at Mitsubishi.
