OK, I know I am asking the impossible, but here goes anyway. I want a car for trackdays, but I want something cheap and cheerful, yet reasonably quick. I don't want to spend more than £2k. Any ideas? Also, where would I look for something like this?

A mate and I are considering doing the same thing. We have been looking at buying a car for a few hundred quid and then spending some money getting the suspension, brakes and engine sorted. The only thing we are bothered about is finding a car with sound mechanicals, that is going to be reasonably cheap to keep running. We are currently looking at buying any one of the following:
Pug 205 1.9 GTi
MK I/II Golf Gti
MK II/III XR2/XR2i
We kinda dismissed any turbo/trick cars becuase of the potential running costs.

Saw a 1.6 Pug 205 GTI at Kemble last time I was there, was going nicely on Michelin semi cut slickish tyres.
Also seen a Mini (stripped down and modified) do well there.
Have fun!

Just seen a 309 Gti, 10 months MOT, 3 months tax, 64k miles, one owner, £500. Are they any good? I seem to remember they used to get good write ups but I'm a bit hazy on them.

I hillclimb a modified Pug 205 GTi which is surprisingly good. The handling is fantastic and its much more nimble than the Subaru which I used to hillclimb.
The times aren't as far away as you'd think either
Bought the car cheaply (about £1000), but by the time seats, harnesses, cage have been fitted. Then modified with race cam and Quaife diff it starts getting more expensive !
Probably talking about £3000 in total but its reasonably quick now.

About a mounth ago a mate of mine bought a Formula 27 Lotus 7 replica for £1650. He's 23, he'd only passed his test a month before, and the insurance was only £260 for a year!!
Its a 1.7 litre crossflow, goes reasonably quick, and is a hoot to drive Its got an Escort engine (bored out from a 1.6) and driveline and a cortina fron end, and was only built 2.5 years ago!
Thing is with him, its his only car - and it hasn't even got a roof or side windows!!
Ben.

Another vote for the Pug 205 Gti
Took a rallycross one on the track at Blyton. Excellent fun and surprisingly good handling.
Taking a rally prepared one on the 205 challenge next year with Michelle
Good luck

Only one choice: Capri 2.8 Injection, for howling sideways V6 fun. Cheap as chips, fix with a hammer, mods are pocket money. Turbo Technics cars quicker than a UK Scoob.
Or a 1.9 205. I've got one for sale as well. Too nice for a track though. See Private.

As an ex 309 Gti owner who owned one up to over 130k I can fully recommend the car. Loads of fun, mine had engine and brake mods and gave most things run for their money. My car had a real 160 bhp + compared with the standard 130. Very nice cars, and cheap because everyone wants 205's. The best 309's were made after the late 1989 (G reg) facelift, better quality.
Mail me if you want more info. I'd definately own another. At 130k + my biggest bill was £300 for a top end rebuild when I warped the head at 123k (I stupidly drove the car for too long after I blew the head gasket). No other big bills and plenty of cheap spares available.
Check it is straight (ie no big crashes), and check the electrics, they can be a pain. But otherwise they are reliable and fun, but remember 'LIFT OFF OVERSTEER', they are much worse than scooby's for this, but great fun once you learn to steer with the throttle.
Mail me if you want more info,
Jon
