Default clutch or gearbox ?

first i will start of by saying hi

now my problem.
just bought a 99 import sti v3,from jap performance bradford.
car seemed ok nice to drive, got half way home heard a funny sorta wineing noise, and the car seemed a bit draggy for a sec,
i pulled over, the car was in neutral but was still slowly edgeing forward,
also now very hard to get into first gear.once in first goes through the rest of the gears ok.thiers no loseness in the gearbox, its just first gear thats the problam, and the edging forward in neutral.
im hopeing its the clutch and not the gearbox.
it is going into the garage but im hoping any of you guys might have any idea what it could be.

i phoned the guy at jap performance, bradford
all i got out of him was bought as seen, contact trading standards if you want.
lol that was nice of him after he just taken nearly £7000 of me
if anyone has any suggestions what it could be i would be gratefull
thanks

oh also
how can i get my cd palyer to fit into the dash as the jap stero that was taken out seems to be smaller than my uk cd player
is thier some sort of fixing braket or panel i can get.

Car is not 'Sold as seen' from a trader. Car should be mechnically sound and fit for the purpose.

Contact Trading Standards.

Don't let anyone touch it except Jap Perf or they will have the instant excuse.
Talk to them again, and if a big Zero straight to the Trading Standards and 'do them'.
Note down EVERYTHING said/done even telephone converstions.

Keep your head, keep firm and polite.

Good luck from us all!

"Sold as seen" doesn't mean a thing. Try them again, if no joy speak with trading standards. (you could also mention that you belong to several subaru car clubs and word of mouth is often great advertisment)

as above don't let anyone else touch it apart from jap performance until sorted. if you do, they can say that problem was caused by other garage.

as far as stereo goes you don't need the cage or the clips on the side that come with uk stereo. unscrew these then remove the facia surround from the dash. there is a cage already there that houses the stereo and dials if you've got them. you can screw the stereo straight into this. much more secure than the uk way of doing it. if you can can hold on till the weekend i'll take you some pics as it's only a 5 min job. may be worth holding on till you get the clutch / gearbox problem sorted incase anything happens with the car.

If i was you i would check your oil in gearbox....theres a dip stick for it on the left hand side of intercooler....if thats fine then phone him back and ask him to drive the car and see what he thinks. I would also tape the conversation ....the car was fine when you left thats why he is being like that, they also dont offer any warranty on these cars so he is within his rights...its a subaru impreza import.

As for the cd player...put it in the lower half and buy yourself some gauges for the upper half....sorted.

Default trading standards!

got lots of friends in the second hand car trade and after phoning them for you a bit of advice(nice arent i?),you really really should go straight to trading standards.
Bobthebodger, sorry, but you really should stick to bodging things and not advising people wrongly about their rights,ie garage is within their rights!
This is a very simple case of the goods not being fit for the purpose intended. The car not even making the journey home.As mentioned before phone them, tell them of your intentions, and if not satisfied straight to t standards!!!
GOOD LUCK! 7 grand!should be ashamed, other potential buyers be very aware!!!

fecked if i know but surely someone who offers an import with no history and its been checked over by the new owner and its fine so he buys it....drives it down the road and it breaks, fine take it back and get it fixed under the warranty...but jap performance dont offer warranty...i never got one off him...i asked but he said its a high performace sports car that can break easily and its an import with no history.... sold as seen really, are you mechanically minded m8????.. will be interesting to find out how you go on.

what relevance does "its a high performance sports car,it ll go wrong" have on whether a car if fit for the purpose intended?
so ferrari,porsche,lambo,tvr,etc....etc...... dont do warranties because of them being "high performance sports cars" etc....
what if a used car franchise buy a car from an auction(very high %),with no history, you buy it and it blows down the road?you saying cos car has no history its sold as seen?go look this up on trading standards website if you dont believe?
NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE INTENDED!

Yep trading standards is the route you should take. But note, anything over £5K claim will go to court (not the inexpensive small claims court), can be costly and lengthy. New gearbox is about £750, exeedy clutches on fleebay for about £120. Just something to think about.

Welcome to Scoobynet. A small point, STi3 is MY97

If it is a STi3 and was sold as a 99 that's another point in you argument, i.e. mis-described. If it is a 99 STi it'll be a v5

IMO The only real advantage to buying from a dealer is that you have 'some' come back. I'd like to think Bodger is wrong.

Good luck. Good advice so far.

Bodger is ( as he has posted on other threads about similar things ) completely wrong - if he was enough of a mug to swallow that BS from JP when they ripped him off, more fool him, but dont go posting telling other people that what JP are doing is legal !

Unless the car was specifically sold as a trade sale ( in which case different laws cover it ), then there is no such thing as 'sold as seen' anymore.

Regardless of if it has a warranty or not, items have to be fit for their purpose - a car that cannot even get the buyer home is not fit for its purpose - doesnt matter if its a Fiat or a Ferrari or imported from Outer Mongolia.

The seller is trying it on - they will either have to fix the problem completely to your satisfaction or they will have to refund you - its that simple.

Hi,

I must admit i am quiet surprised from whats happend, i too have dealt with J.P. & after weeks of searching for a clean scooby they had what i was looking for.

Now i can remember at the time i too asked for a warranty & he did mention the fact he can issue a warranty but would not cover me for anything as its an import.

Therefore he offered to have the car fully serviced i.e. cambelt, oil/filter, etc.

I've not had any problems other than a knock sensor which was due to my carelessness...(97 unleaded!)

If its the clutch thats gone then i'd say its due to wear & tear but i suppose its worth getting some kinda financial help from them.

thanks for all the help, but more bad news.
now tday the big end has gone on it
looks like i bought a total shed.
spoke to couple of people about the gearbox, and they said it sounded like syncromesh, was thinking about paying for it my self,i know stupid, but with me working and things didnt really have time to take it bak to JAP PERFORMANCE IN BRADFORD.
now the big end goes, how worse can it get.
anyway i phone the guy tell him the situation, hes still trying to say ive hammerd the ***** of it lol, what a joke
i tell him im going to trading standerds,or we try to sort it out.he says fine he will ask about a engine,
then get a phone call just now trying to blag me saying oh you told me about the gearbox last week now the big end goes, youve caused it virtually.
lol i have had it a week and half and hardly been anywere.
so trading standerds in the morning it is,as im getting nowere with this guy.
so BEWERE JAP PERORMANCE OF BRADFORD GIVE IT A WIDE BIRTH, in my experiance.
i will keep you updated to my progress

BTW its a 96 not a 99 as i said in my first post,sorry

I'm sure the thread was called something like "anyone want to share £6000", but it seems to have disappeared.

Sorry to hear about your purchase, its not nice to part with such a large amount of money and end up with something tht doesnt work.

Id agree with Nelboy n Mike and contact Trading Standards as the car was not fit for purpose. Either they should refund you the whole amount or pay for any work that needs carrying out. Sounds like Jap Performance arent performing at all!!

Best of Luck.

that looks like a 99/00 car except for the wheels.

00 Front end
00 Bonnet
STi 4 spoiler
96/97 wheels
no STi badges under the side repeaters

I stand ot be corrected mind.

Was it advertised as a 96 or 99 STi?
