Exclamation Silkolene Pro S 5W-40 - Best (Sorry!)?

As the topic says, from the 30 or so pages I read it appears that Silkolene Pro S 5W-40 is coming out on top of the most recommended oil to use (Even though the manual for my WRX PPP MY05 with normal road use suggests 5W30).

Can anyone confirm that this fully (?) Synthetic oil is what I should be using for the best protection in my new motor?

We use Elf 5W40 Syn in our High Performance Petrol and some of the Diesel engines at work and is claimed to be fully Syn (Not sure about the cracked thingy though).

Sorry if this opens up old wounds, but if we can keep away from bitchy comments about each other etc (As other threads I read turned into) I would be most greatful...

TIA...D-an-W

There are 2 really if you want quality fully synthetic.

Silkolene PRO S 5w-40
Motul 300V 5w-40

You'll find them both, and others here: http://www.opieoils.co.uk

Nothing to see Pete. The only oil you need to concern yourself with is the oil of wintergreen you massage into your withered shanks to keep out the cold.

Do you stock my Oil of choice?

Comma Semi at £15 Retail?

I guess with your 'discount special once in a lfetime January offer' this would be about £10 from you with P&P included?

Why is it that oil related threads always deteriorate to the same outcome?

An enthusiast (a newbie in this instance) poses a simple question regarding what oil to use in his/her pride and joy. This person has done some homework and has narrowed it down to 2 different makes that they’re interested in.

Surprise surprise and yet again we get pslewis, with all his wise words of wisdom, informing us to use the equivalent of chip fat in our car.

As soon as Oilman posts a reply, I only have time to reach for my stopwatch before you post yet another irrelevant reply stating along the lines of “Don’t waste your cash all those flashy oils, use oil xxx, it’s good enough and CHEAP.”

Who cares that Oilman is trying to sell his wares on here; he is after all allowed to do so. It’s his job so I’m sure he knows what he’s talking about, so why Mr Lewis do you try to tell him how to do it. Perhaps he should come to your place of work and show you how to sweep up properly.

Tnx oilman, I did see Motul 300V 5W40 for £20.99 per 2L today at a local place, you also list 5W30 which is actually the recommend viscosity for my car, or would you go 5W40 from experience?

@Robocop To be honest I did half expect it to happen from my earlier research

You idiot .... so, he is allowed to post yet I am NOT able to post an alternative view?? You are a clown

I have never said that any Oil is crap .... each Oil has it's uses and it's place.

Fact remains that Subaru state what Oils to use ... I have no issue with anyone recommending another Oil ... thats NOT the thing I object to!!

What I DO object to MOST STRONGLY is the statement that what I put in my car is rubbish and will cause harm ...... it WILL NOT!!

Therefore you only need to spend £15 for 5 Litres to keep your pride and joy running smoothly .....................

Please do not confuse an Oil Salesman, who has a vested interest, with a Chartered Chemical Engineer who ACTUALLY knows what he is talking about! I know that its a difficult thing to appreciate, but take it from me .... COMMA Semi-Synthetic at £15 for 5 litres is perfectly good enough for your car!

You would not be asking about Oil on a BBS if your needs required anything any different, because you WOULD KNOW!

@ pslewis I fully understand your point about "Budget" oils being good enough (19 years in motor industry) and that some manufacturers are totally overpricing their products.

What I was looking for though was the Best Oil I could lay my hands on, not one that is just "Good Enough", I do appreciate all your replys too...

Thanks for the idiot/clown bit.

You can use whatever you wish in your car but appears to someone like me with a vastly lesser post count, that you ALWAYS reply to Oilman posts stating the same thing over and over again. It just gets boring that's all.

Thanks mate .... fair response and well put.

Of course, you put whatever makes you feel comfortable in your car.

I just like to ensure that the Engineering view is aired to balance the Sales patter

I am sure you will be very happy with your £30 for 5 litres Oil ........

As an Engineer I can assure you I will not be wasting that kind of dosh

Have you EVER thought about, now this concept will challenge you, NOT reading the posts???????

Just a thought ......

I get bored cutting the lawn with some nail clippers, so I DON'T DO IT!!

It seems the Idiot/Clown but fits you pretty well? I'm glad you enjoyed it

Of course you can use a 5w-30 if the car is stock and driven on the road as this is the Manufacturers recommendation. 5w-40 give more headroom if this is not the case.

Check the members section of my site for prices.

Standard other than PPP and going to be run on at least 97Ron fuel. I might give the Motul 5W40 a shot then as I can get it local, your site is asking for a login and pass atm

Default Have to agree with mr pslewis again.......

As another engineer working in the nuclear industry my thoughts again, If sabaru insist on a 5w40w oil(example) then ANY 5w40w oil will do the job.....if it cost £50+ a gallon or £10,if its marked up as 5w40w then it is and it is more than adequate.
I'd rather put the cheaper oil in and then have an extra tank of gogo juice to blast around in for a day
Who's the mad one?

And as an (ex) mechanical engineer and lecturer in mech. engineering - where lubrication is very often an essential part of the plot, I will use the best quality and specification lubricant in my car and maybe resist blasting around for one day!
I am, I am embarrased to admit, not aware of the vital role of lubrication in the nuclear industry. I'm sure quite a few of us would appreciate some knowledge in this respect?

Hmmmmm, in my experience, Engineers who cannot hack it become Lecturers ........ they can't impress their peers, so try to impress the kiddies!

I've got news for you .............. there are grown up Engineers on here as well as teenagers!!

So, you will forgive me if I save money by utilising my superior intelligence, thank you
