What tyres do you buy ? and crucially how much do you pay ?

How do you know they haven't been repaired or kerbed? For not a lot more you could have new tyres.Shop around and you'll be surprised. Do you always manage to get 4 tyres of same brand and similar tread depth?

I have just bought a set of nankang NS2 as im short of cash, its the first time I have gone for a budget set, they have been on the car 2 days so far, and upto now I have to say I am impressed

I have heard the dont buy them because horror stories, and upto now I can only guess that they were proffesional drivers rather than general every day drivers.

I havent pushed them, but I have done a couple of corners at speed, and I have done a couple of 100 + runs and they didnt give me anything to worry about at all.

so thumbs up from me upto now

Default Cheap is not really bad....

I have had cars such as rover 800 turbos, rover 800 v6,rover 600 turbos, proton gti ,and mitisi GTO along with my 03 sti ppp, i have NEVER paid more than £70 for a tyre...... eg budget every time! I do quite a few miles and most of them are quite hard driving, as of yet i have nothing bad to say about cheap tyres
If it's a name thing then spend your money...........................

Budget tyres can seem all well and good; you drive around them -so to speak- untill you get some decent ones on there! My Eagle F1 GSD3s are superb -especially in the wet. Cost about £80 a corner. It grates to have to spend that much on rubber (hardly the most exciting purchase), but in many ways, tyres are the most important thing you can upgrade on your car; all the fancy suspension, big brake kits, power upgrades are useless if your contact points with the tarmac are sub-standard.

If you have a performance car and you want to get the most out of it, you really need to budget for good tyres.

Toyo Proxy T-1R's (215/35/18s) £90 a corner, fitted.

Edited to say - just read the report, looks like I might give the F1's a try next time round

That report was quite interesting, but it does depend on the car used.

I seen tyres which test really well on one car then turn out to be terrible on another car - e.g. the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx gets a very good rating at in some other Tirerack tests, but apparently is a complete disaster on an Evo.

On the RX8 many drivers seem to come back to the Bridgestone RE040 over the F1's or the Toyos, even though on the Scoob some people feel that the RE040 is a complete liability.

I guess the suspension design, spring rates, damping and the weight of the car will interact with the tyre in all sorts of ways. Its a shame you can't borrow tyres for a test drive (for a small fee, refundable if you buy them).
