STI TYPE RA WHICH 1
#4
Version 1 or twos definately have a closed deck engine block which responds better to tuning. P plate and onwards just had the wrx engine in them tho(open deck).

I have competed in rallying for over 15 years in both seats,i am mech fitter and have some experiance in building and preparing cars however i have no knowledge or very little when it comes to Subarus hence my questions.
As for building a car properly i cant see any reason to strip an engine that is working, the car will be running pretty much standard until i get a bit more money. When funds allow i shall see which way to go ie Gems, box, suspension, brakes etc.

For either a tarmac or a forest car, Id suggest going for an early WRX-TypeRA; ideally a C-Series 1995-1996 model year car (available in Japan from September 1994 onwards). The RA is a little lighter (due to the deletion of some features) but its principal advantage lies in its closed deck block, close ratio gearbox and manic final drive ratio. The 1995 model also benefits from an extra 20PS (up from 240PS of the earlier A & B-Series WRX and WRX TypeRA); whilst the Z4 ECU can jjust agout get-by using good quality pump fuel. I cant see a real advantage to using an STI TypeRA; theyre dearer, heavier (apart from the 'altered production' 1995 STI TypeRA; now that would be a waste...) and less focused.
If you find a company who offer a reasonably priced reinforcing kit, or any other Impreza-specific preparation parts, then Id be very interested to hear about it.

Thanks for the info Simon,
I was thinking on the STI as it has 275 PS and the RA with the lower ratio and weight. I am hoping to get a 1996 with 4 pots there are a few about on Ebay but so many types and models all for around £4/6k.
As for suppliers i will be using AS Perfomance for any parts that are required.
The car wont be seam welded as i only plan to do tarmac.

The 1995 STI TypeRA could be for you then. Theyre all white with a roof vent and 275PS. These were retro-converted from Feather White TypeRAs and share their applied model number.

I have a 98 Type RA, with full underbody guards, front and rear lsd and cage, ap pads and a few other bits and bobs. I bought it from a Japanese guy and I'm ready to sell on, because I haven't had time to prepare it. PM if interested
