Question

I understand that the new road tax will be based upon CO2 emissions. What will this mean for Impreza Turbo owners? Will the tax go up?

Not surprisingly the Scooby Turbo is in the top one of 4 bands. The price will be £155 so no change.

I am still amazed they are not sh4fting us for £500 or something.

Still it will only apply to new cars bought after when ever the date is, so current cars unaffected.

It is based on CO2 emissions specifically, therefore if you bashed out the cats. to prevent the nasties like CO being converted to CO2, would you pay less??

Perhaps they should tax people for breathing as well.
After all, we must be an enormouse producer of this evil gas !
How can the world survive ?

Perhaps if we all install an oak tree or something in the car that'll balance the CO2 emissions?

Sorry, Friday afternoon.

Don't say you're surprised they're not shafting us more: they'll hear you and think that they can get away with it...

RichS: I like the thinking, and along the same lines: how about a twin pipe exhaust, one of which doesn't work, and that's the one that they test.

Come to think of it, that'll probably pass the MOT with no cats on either... Can I patent this idea?

ahhhh yes,

I think my first million is just around the corner. All I need to do is invent a catalyst that converts carbon dioxide and water into noxious gases.

I think I shall start the search in my own gut!

... but surely the (eventual) amount of CO2 is directly proportional to the amount of petrol used - thus they should increase the price per litre of fuel to collect a proportional amount of tax. You can't get a fairer scheme that that?

Er,

I'll get my coat!

I thought CO2 was good for trees and plants etc. Seems to me that the trees these days are much bigger than they were years ago .

Cars must be doing some good!

They have already increased the price of fuel to collect a proportional amount of tax - that's what all the fuss a few weeks ago was about!

Personally I'd vote for road tax to be just a nominal £10 or so, just to cover the cost of making sure drivers have to present insurance certificates and MOTs once a year. Quite why I should pay £155 whether I use the car or not is beyond me :-(

We get charged £155 because they can get away with it and especially because it is a nice little earner to build up the reserves of cash in the coffers (which can then be used to pay for non-car related things). I guess it's either something like this or more income tax.

Brooks - the intention is that road tax will increase considerably over the next few years to something around £450 for top band cars. Have a look at the thread recently which had a link to the Daily Telegraph outlining the plans for the next ten years of motoring - it does not make for easy reading.

If that £155 actually went to improving our driving conditions - more and better quality roads, better lighting, break down recovery etc etc it would be money well spent but the fact that it just goes into the "pot" to pay for Blairs holiday in Italy, Prescot's fact finding mission to the maldives, multi million pound refurbishment of H of P canteen etc etc makes it a complete bag of cr4p. And another thing TV license - if the BBC don't want us to watch their transmissions for free they should encrypt it because no bugger would bother anyway.

Some guy was taken to court for not paying his TV licence and he proved that his TV had been altered so that it only picked up satellite TV - so he got away with not having to pay the TV licence fee. Only one guy, but it still brought a smile to my face when I read about it.

Didn't Labour say that they had a big plan and quite a few billion to spend on transport over the coming few years?

AWD,

i think that since "the guy" got away with his satellite only TV, the law has been changed. Now you need a licence to receive anything broadcast by any company based in the UK (or something like that).

Thus nowadays you would need to hardwire your (fixed dish) satellite receiver to a foreign channel (e.g. RTL) to get away with it (but then they would probably change the law again!).

That's just typical!! Change the law for one person. Can't have anyone getting away can we.

I always wondered why the TV licence fee for a person who is registered as blind is only a few pounds less than the licence for a normally sighted person. Seems a bit unfair.

Only applies to newly registered cars (AFAIR).

So lets all keep our old less environmentally friendly bangers eh.

Question

So far as I am aware the law is that you need a licence to use television receiving equipment. It doesn't matter what channel you are watching.

Telly licencing and road tax are in effect job creation shemes. There are warehouse loads of civil servants directly employed to administer and enforce it. Post Offices are kept crowded by folk buying TV licence stamps, tax discs etc. The Royal Mail must send millions of quids worth of mail related to this and other similar paperwork. (eg insurance quotes and renewals!)

If they do away with it the consequences for our economy would be catastrophic. Think about it. Right the way down to butty shops closing down when offices are shut and so on.

Ditto the Inland Revenue.

Some of these things cost nearly as much to enforce as they collect.

Consider your £155 road tax as a charity contribution to keep someone else in a job. It's nowt to do with roads or transport. Similarly it is nowt to do with the environment either!

Here endeth the lesson.

My old impreza sport (96 P),which i flogged to my old man has just passed its second mot, interesting to note that the co2 emmission barely registered!! so how does it warrent the higher tax band?
as another matter of interest, nasa has just compiled a report on the greenhouse gasses, and they think the cause is methane,so i say just get rid of any methane producing ,treehugging, beanmuching, vegetarians and the problems will be solved!
regards
dave
with appologies to any impreza driving vegies
