Default Check Engine

Went and looked at my first Scooby over the weekend (01/X - Turbo 2000 - 46k - Just had recent belt Change).

All in all looked a nice clean example, Talked about price and I was quite keen.

Went for a test drive and the Check Engine light came on twice!!

The guy (small time dealer) had only just got the car and said he didn't know what that meant - Wasn't sure if I completely trusted him though.

I hadn't thrashed it - Didn't take it about 4.5 on the rev counter in any gear or above 80mph

Until that I was ready to be parted with a fair wedge of cash - Scared me a little as I know servicing can be expensive - Wouldn't want to be stung straight away

Should I dismiss this car - Or can anyone give a decent reason why the light came on?

Cheers

Walk away. There are plenty other cars out there!

It may be nothing but it's not your car so why worry!

Agreed. Check engine lights MUST be looked into immediately; could be something very minor, but may be serious. A dealer just shrugging his shoulders is no good! It's a very simple thing to park the car and get the diagnostic code from the ECu and then et on the phone to a specialist.

Walk away.

Agreed. My MY01 WRX would v occasionally show it check light after a thrashing and it worried me a bit. By definition its a warning light so someting must be wrong.

Like has been said .... walk away - you should NEVER buy the first one you see anyway!

Every car you see makes the chance of you buying a very good one a lot higher!

Personally, and it's just my opinion, I would rule out the following:-

Imports
Modified Cars
Tracked Cars
Cars owned by anyone younger than 40
Anything that indicates the owner is a RoyBacer
Crashed cars
Dirty Cars (lots of stuff hidden under a layer of dust/dirt)

Plus ...

Get a FULL Service History .... UK Main dealer for 5 years, then anyone capable after that

Good luck .... a lot of joy is in the searching

Remember one thing ...... there are 100's for sale - only 20% are worth your money!

Default My experience

MichaelRo,

I FULLY appreciate the above advice as thats coreect

...I too experienced the very same issue. Driving along and all of a sudden the check engine light came on. Pulled onto laybay luckily. Contacted Xtreme, who maintain car FULLY at MY EXPENSE LOL. ALL was ok ....engine running smooth gauges all functional and correct thresholds etc etc etc. Only gauge NOT working was speedo.

Eventual diag, turned out the connectors to the back were 'dirty' with minescule dirt or summin....but resetted connectors and all ok.

Does this car go off-boost all of a sudden over 4.5K revs?

If so thats the ecu cutting it out thinkin ur going faster than u actually are.

Get that checked and inspected by a SPECIALIST not trainees and/or grads

Hope that helps

Could be someting could be nothing, mine came on in traffic a couple of months back and went straight out again, but I still had it checked by the dealer, they can be very sensitive.

My engine light came on a few months ago, took it to the main dealer who said it was the lamba sensor.A new one from the dealer was about 125,fitted it myself and it hasn't come on since. The car felt fine to me though but as said before it needs checking at a dealer or specialist.

I walked away from one just because the service book had tea spilled all over it and I couldn't read it properly.

Ended up travelling a couple of hundred miles to find the "perfect" one I wanted.

Ted.
