help needed with a prob

Default help needed with a prob

my friend has an import classic wrx and the other day when he was driving home the engine light came on he says there is not change in the way it is idling or running, he also said that the speedo doesnt work will inttermit and he also said that the engine light use to flicker on and off.
anyone have any ideas on what this could be?
(sorry about the spelling)

sounds like the speedo cable is about to go, and when it does the engine management light will come on and put his car into limp home mode (limit him to 4500 revs).

I had this on my old STi 4. It turned out to be the speedo converter unit - the speedo would stop working, the CEL would come on and it engaged limp-home mode.

Worth checking out.
