Most likely the cable for the optional interior high vis break light.

The crackling may be down to the fact your rear screen demist is also your radio antenna. Not 100% on that one though, but the late 02s had the external antenna removed and fitted in the rear screen I think.

Wiring for rear wash wipe on JDM cars? No I guess the loom would be different.

My guess is interior brake light which would be in the back window for cars with no rear spoilers.

Silly question but do you have a light in your boot?

I only ask because i had a MY02 WRX and found a connector wired in at the top of the boot. After a bit of searching i found the light unit that fitted onto it. Great build quality!

I'm afraid not.
The towbar multiplug is located behind the trim adjacent to the offside rear light cluster.

I very much doubt it'll be the brake light wiring, on my classic, there was a connector under the parcel shelf, BUT it had an extention in it to reach into the boot lid......
The connector thats being enquired about is not connected to anything..... my money's on rear wash wipe, or water spray...

Thinking about it i'm sure the WR1 had the connector in place for a rear wiper. It'll either be that or your boot light.
