Post Morettes or STi Headlamps?

Hi everyone!

I'm after some new headlamps for my bugeye and wouldn't mind a few opinions on which ones to buy. I know the Sti ones don't get rid of that bugeye look but they seem to improve the front a little I also love the morettes. Thanks.

Paul

Morettes do change the front of your car. Your right about the WC ones. The're not too good. I think I want the STi ones and buy a xenon conversion kit off ebay. Morettes turn out really expensive once sprayed.

Morettes can be had for 350 and then spraying will be another 70 or so. How much are the STi units as I am guessing you can only buy them from Subaru themsevles?

Also, I know the Morettes are straight forward to fit to a WRX, but is the same true when trying to fit STi units to a WRX?

I haven't been able to make up my mind as to which to go for either. I've de-tango'd mine and I think this makes the standard WRX units look a lot better. I've also got a silver car, and for some reason the morettes look better IMHO on the darker cars.

As I can't decide which to change to or whether I should just stick with my cleared out WRX units, I've decided to spend the cash fitting an STi high level spoiler instead.

Mines silver too. I was going to buy them on ebay too. They have a set of silver morettes on ebay but one of the lenses is broke. Probably cost a fortune to replace the optic lens. I was going to de tango mine but it seems like hard work. Did you put them in the oven?

Yes - needed just over 100 degrees for ten minutes. It's not a hard job to do, just takes a few hours. You also have to be careful not to mark the inside of the lens or scratch the very delicate silver reflective surface - which is why I would recommend against shattering the orange bits and shaking out the lose peices.

When done in tandem with crystal side markers and indicators, it's a great improvement considering how little it costs to do.

That is a great improvement. I've got the clear side markers and repeaters which I think work best on the silver as they are preety much the same colour. If I don't buy the morettes or STi lights i'll have a go at De tangoeing!

No - the three connecting plugs are different. I'm told that you can get an adaptor harness though.

I've had a bugeye WRX with and without Morettes, and an STi, and I prefer the STi lights. The Morettes look OK, but they make the huge foglights look silly if you still have them.

STi. The wiring's not that bad, bit more trouble if you want the electric hight adjustment to work.

Is that 3 different plugs for the morettes or the STi's?

It's the STi's units that will have the differing plugs and therefore require an adaptor. Electric height adjustment is also not guaranteed on morettes - there are two versions.

The STi units do look nice, but still not sure about the black units on my own silver car. Might be a bit too much of a contrast going on there and might also need carbon side markers and so on. On a black car then yes they suit perfectly. I also suspect that the STi units from Subaru (never seen any for sale second hand) are going to cost a fair wack.

Not sure I mind the WRX units (detango'd) enough to justify the change to either morettes or STi's anymore as said earlier. Car styling has moved on since the release of the bug-eye, many other cars have come along with similar shaped headlights, and the design doesn't look quite as 'radical' (to put it nicely) as it did initially.

Think i'd still sway towards morettes for the aggressive look but also consider beefing up other bits of the body work to complement (lower front spoiler, fog light covers etc).

There's two types of STi lights as well - the UK spec ones like I guess Frayz has on that have black surrounds to the reflectors and are originally halogen bulbs and then there's the JDM versions that have dark chrome / bright flitter type colouring and can be HID bulbs...

You can put HID into the UK ones via several well-known aftermarket kits but if you've got JDM version lights with HID already in, then it's not really practical to convert them to halogen (as if you'd want anyway as the HIDs are way superior and have a properly designed beam pattern)

UK companies can supply the HID bulbs if required (D2S type AFAIR) and external ballasts can be used if the JDM ones don't have them included when you find a set...

These are the JDM ones for comparison...

This is the rear view of the JDM ones showing all the connections but not all might be there...

I like the JDM's too. You can get them on ebay brand new. If you search for impreza JDM (worldwide) they have a few. These are from america.

Cheers Paul.

Not as expensive as I thought they would be. They don't look quite the same as Andy's though - but eBay seems to be the place to find them.

Any closer to making up your mind? Sticking with the STi's units?

Yes I decided to go for the Sti's seems to be the favourite. If I get them I'll send you a picture of them on the silver bugeye.
