Model Differences
#1
I'm an ex UK spec scoobie owner and I'm now in the market for another one. I'm either going to get another UK spec one but I'm also considering an STI.
Could someone Tell me the difference between an normal WRX STI V / VI and the RA WRC LTD edition? I can't seem to get a definitive answer.

Guys,
The difference between the Type R and the RA is that the RA is a four door and the Type R is a coupe!! Both of these differ from the standard WRX STi in that they were designed as the basis for rally homologation cars, for grp.N and A. In general the type R and Type RA have;
Quick Ratio steering rack (13:1)
Shorter Gearing
Electronically Adjustable centre diff lock
No ABS
Twin pot rear calipers
Intercooler water spray
In some models, uprated engine internals
All Type RA's have a roof vent
Type R v ltd's also have a roof vent.
Otherwise the type R V ltd's are usually just a different colour option made in a limited number. Early RA's did not have electric windows/central locking and weighed less. I believe both of these weigh slightly less than the normal sti's probably reduced soundproofing or something.
Hope this helps,
Nito

Hi P1,
It's a difficult question to answer really since handling is subjective. All STi's regardsless of whether type R or RA come with the lightweight aluminium front wishbones when compared to the UK cars and they come with a front strut brace. The springs and dampers are also virtually the same so the only difference really comes with the centre diff. In the rain these would probably be a bit more lairy and prone to oversteer. It depends whether you like this or not. Also the R and RA don't have ABS which may or may not be to your liking. Undoubtedly the R and RA are for more advanced drivers who like this sort of thrill. The standard STi's and UK cars are probably safer in the wet. In the dry I don't think you could say the type R/RA necessarily handles better only differently. Simon De Banke aka webmaster is probably the best person to ask.
Hope this is of help,
Nito

I have a STI ver 4 RA - my investigations told me it had a slightly quicker steering rack than the type R (although I couldnt notice it), no electrics (as mentioned), shorter geering (5th is abt 19mph/1000rpm), Roof vent (pointless but different), water spray (not all sti's do), lighter body work (bonnet, boot etc) and less sound deadening (not sure where though).
RA is, as somebody said, more rear biased than the standard STI and bit more of a handful - all the more rewarding for it though - I would say, definitely get the RA if 4 doors is preferable, or R if not.

Hi all,
EVO magazine rates them in the following order for all round ability in both wet and dry conditions and how easy they are to live with: P1, RB5, EVO6, STI6, STI Type R and 22B, UK. I think. Shoot me down if I'm wrong guys..

i think 22b is between rb5 and evo6 because in ultimate 4*4 comparison it is same with evo on wet but i think it is better on dry than evo isn't it?
aren't there any road test with type-RA LTD?

The stuff I've read particularly (in EVO magazine particularly) suggests the biggest impact on grip is wheel size and tyres (I know it sound like I'm stating the obvious) but this is why the RB5 and P1 can beat the STI's as they come with 17" wheels and better rubber as standard.
It would have been interesting to test all the cars on the same size wheel and tyre combination to level the playing field.
