I have to say its praying on my mind a little what to expect out of my RE070s if we get snow this weekend as they're not meant to be very good in it.

Do I cough up and get them changed to a more suitable tyre before it arrives or just leave them and hope that the 4WD will get me through ?

Indeed, should I do anything with the A-DCCD settings, or just leave it on Auto ?

Any input gratefully received.

Sorry mate but REO70s are crap no matter what the road condition.

Also a scooby is no better in snow with summer tyres than any other car.

your best bet is to buy a set of winter tyres, NOT SNOW TYRES! winter tyres!!!

They are softer than summer tyres and have more silicon in them, they are awsome in temperatures below 7deg C you will really appreciate your car more with a set of winter tyres aswell. so while all the other drivers are slipping and sliding around at 5 mph saying "we don't get enough snow to warrent winter tyres!" you will be driving around just like the roads were dry. If you don't believe me try it and find out.

I have a set of Nokian WRs from Finland and they are amazing.

One of the other advantages is that you only use them for 3 or 4 months of the year so they last for about 3 or 4 seasons before you need to get new ones. Just take em off sling em in the garage till next winter. YOu won't regret it trust me.

Yep, traction is ok in snow in scoobs but stopping is where they fall down

Subarus are lethal in snow on standard tyres (had experience of this a few years ago). The car just wont stop.

However, with winter tyres the car is awsome and I would recommend getting another set of wheels to put them on.

4wd good for getting up slippy hills etc but stopping and turning just as bad as any car. Winter tyres is good idea but its a lot of money. Mind you i dare say they would last ages as not much tyre wear in winter and lower speeds. Would probably last life of car and Kwik fit only charge £80 to change all 4 tyres. You could swap every winter and only need to buy a winter set once hopefully. In fact i think ive convinced myself and i might do that.

Getting real winter tyres isnt as easy here as it is in continental Europe though is it? Any suggestions, because Ive been using remoulded M&S tyres which were designed to be used on a stage in Keilder somewhere?

Never bought winter tyres in my life and i dont know who make any. Ill be checking t'net now though. Ill post later if i see any good deals.

Nope sorry, but I recently got a Costco voucher through the post which gave 20% off if you bought four. Oops, just looked at the voucher, it's for Aberdeen only. It might still be worth while giving your local one a call!

my winter wheels just have a cheap set of kwickfit tyres on them with bouncy sidewalls to stop me smashing the kerbs

Surely that's not right - £80 just to change the tyres? My local kwik-fit have done it for free in the past...

if the lads think the punter will come back they will normally do it for free
if they think the bloke is a total bell-miester they tend to charge him

Just a thought at £95 each plus new rims this could be a costly option (if we only get a bit of bad weather) however would it be any good to say just put them on front wheels or would this upset handling?

TBH with you I am not sure, however I would be sceptical to fit them on just the front. You will still have traction problems with the rear wheels, also the problem with summer tyres is they are not designed to work below 7 deg C and the compound they are mode from is not designed to work that cold, the tyres actually freeze and go hard hence loosing grip.

Winter tyres are much much softer and contain silicon which keeps them soft and grippy, they also have more tread on them.

If you are getting new wheels aswell do you realy want to risk trashing them for the sake a set of tyres. as I said earlier you only use them for about 4 months anyway then store them until next winter so you get about 3 or 4 seasons use out of them so in the scheme of things they are not that expensive.

How would winter tyres ride in summer conditions?

Would they just shread to pieces? Would they be noisy as hell or uncomfy? Would the handling be terrible?

Got no space to store tyres, hence considering leaving them on all year.

Winter tires wouldn't last very long during summer use. I am running Bridgestone LM22's (215/40/17) which are awesome in the wet and cold but they just can't match summer tyres in the handling department on dry roads. I wouldn't want to leave them on all year.

For my 05 WRX, this winter I bought a secondhand set of rims and had some Continental Wintercontact TS790 fitted. I have found these much better than the standard Bridgestones in cold/ damp conditions, haven't tried them in snow yet. I bought them from here www.bmtr.co.uk

Actually the RE070's are very good in the dry, if not excellent, and not half bad in the wet either (ask the T sport corolla driver who tried to keep up with me on wet country roads )
Very progressive in slippery conditions, ie they let you know that the car wants to do something else rather than just do it but like you say, totally crap in snow, like driving on ice, though being 225 doesnt help, you want thin tyres for winter, not fat ones )

Hi Micky...I'm on a month's annual leave so am just dossing about the house most days. Just bought some toys for the car though...FMIC, induction kit and Nissan 300zx TT MAF. What an excuse to get rid of my daft size scoop haha! Not sure whether to put the original scoop back on or go for one of the reverse scoops from ETS (like this). Too much time and not enough cash
