The ecu will surely be acting strange to this new lower octane fuel.

The quick and easy answer is that the car requires an octane booster but it isnt quite so simple. When this car was manufactured Japanese 'Premium Unleaded' didnt have quite as high an octane rating as it does today (no matter what il-informed people tell you), so its a lot closer to Tesco 99RON and Optimax than people assume. Secondly; the early WRXs are better able to run on our pump fuel than later cars. Your car only made 240PS and as long as you dont wring its neck, it should be able to get by quite happily with 98/99RON fuel.

For peace of mind you should buy and fit a 'KnockLink'; disregarding all comment from pslewis. Peter is aged and he smells of wee, he is impotent and bitter with the early symptoms of senile dementia. As a result of this he spends his free time here talking cod**** to anyone fool enough to acknowledge him.....

Not if the Applied Model Number begins... GC8B48D. The increase to 260PS came with the C1-Series cars, manufactured from September 1994 (1995 model year).

The date of registration doesnt make much difference Im afraid; check the AMN and youll know for definate. If its a C-Series car then Id suggest fitting the Knockling and taking it from there. If it lights up like a Christmas tree you can do one of three things. One: drive like pslewis. Two: add octane booster. Three: have a replacement ECU fitted, preferably an A'PEXi PowerFC for £750 from Andy Forrest.

The only way to tell is by checking the Applied Model Number. The engines rated output wil be decided absolutely by the vehicles series, either B or C, rather than by its trim.

The PowerFC is relatively cheap compared to other replacement ECUs; but Id regard it as a substantial modification as opposed to a solution to a pre-ignition problem.

On the passenger side inner wing there is an aluminium build-plate, which carries the short Japanese chassis number. The Applied Model Number will be embossed onto it. It will either read GC8B48D or GC8C48D.

GF8B is a 1994 James, 'Wagons didnt change too much though. Bob, now you decide: option 1, 2 or 3.

Well put! IMO the car should run fine on optimax. I have the same set up and i see no knocklink activity. Though mine is a wagon with a td05 and z4ecu upgrade so could be different.

I was about to do that! In summary the A & B Series cars were rated at 240PS. The C (1&2) Series cars 260PS and the D Series cars onward 280PS. B & C Series 'Wagons produced 220PS and D Series onwards cars 240PS.

A KnockLink will cost a shade over £100 but after youve replaced your cambelt, itll be the most important thing that you fit. When you know how your car is acting you can decide which fuel to use.

Yes, you have the 260 ps car - which is about 256 bhp.
These cars can be identified (usually) by the grey and black seats and electric folding mirrors. There were various other revised/improved components on these motors. This car also had the better ecu in terms of suitability for uk fuel. It has a map very close to what prodrive used in the UK at the time.
Enjoy the car.
Oh, the 280 bhp cars were face lift models 1996 on. These struggle more on uk fuel than your car. It pees me off the see so many "300 bhp plus" pre 96 classics on ebay. Theres a wagon on there now with "300 bhp plus" - utter rubbish.

When ever an early Classic (especially a 'Wagon) is advertised as having '280bhp' its a good indication that the vendor is a **** and that the car should be avoided at all costs.
