so presumably halfords etc will have to pull out Ireland- so you won't be able to buy aftermarket Alloys?

does that mean BMW & the like will only be able to sell one type of alloy per car?

sale of all aftermarket engine mods, bodykits etc?

thats seriously OTT

I'd like to know the source of the story. The radio is like the tabloids sometimes, all rumours etc..

Where did the radio station get their info from?

If this is true and is going to happen, surely it is against your human rights, freedom of choice and all that. Oh, wait, you are a law abiding motorist, I forgot you dont have any rights.

That would wipe BMW out as everything is an option and hence modified from standard.

I dont think 'factory fit' options would be classed as a modification.

Cant see how they could really enforce this law anyway to be honest.

Councillor moves to muzzle boy races

A Fianna Fail county councillor has set out to muzzle so-called boy racers, by calling on the Minister of the Environmnet to beef up noise pollution legislation.

Fianna Faill councillor Michael McGrath wants the department to introduce noise pollution legislation to ban the use of modified exhaust systems of “souped up” cars.

Currently local authorities are reluctant to pursue legal cases against the owners of these cars, because there is a loophole in existing legislation.

“The view is that moving motor vehicles aren’t covered by the existing legislation,” McGrath commented.
The councillor plans to table a motion with Cork County Council next month calling on the Department of Envionment to update the legislation.

Note: Approved modifications. So stuff like that jags 18 inch wheels or a porsche sports exhaust should be ok. Some crappy stoopid loud exhaust probably won't. And rightly so. there's loud and there's unsocially loud. The former is ok, the latter isn't.

Although not in ireland, near my office there's a harley with a very offensively loud exhaust. It's actually painful if you are close by. That sort of thing should be sorted. Don't need new laws though, there's existing ones in place here, but do you ever see any policemen doing anything about it? Anyway, if the harley guy was any sort of decent chap, he'd do something about it but he isn't, he's a w4nker.

Spot on i agree. I wouldent be to worried this guy is a micky mouse junior minister trying to get his picture in the paper. That morning he was banning tinted windows and aftermarket exhausts etc and by 5 oclock on a radio show he was back pedeling like mad with loads and loads of "eeehh emmm well eehhh you see oohh" and so on and really made himself look like a complete pratt that couldent ans the questions or get his point across at all.

If they do ban tints i wont be taking mine of till Bertie ahern and his muppet patrol have the tints of there big massive Merc's and all the ambulances and the gardai branch cars.

EU Type Approval legislation has existed for years though; look at the situation in Germany where all modifications need to be TUV'd (type-approved). In theory that can be enforced in England too; and obviously in Ireland.....

Im afraid that this news has been slightly muddled.

The new legislation is for Irish NCT(national car test), and is going thru as we speak.

Tinted windows and loud exhausts are the first stop in making us like Switzerland.

Its due in force for the NCT test in January 06, and i believe that it will go thru no matter who complains.

So, only the car manufactuers "could" make any difference, its going to close a lot of business over the long run, like car accessorie businesses and modified parts suppliers. IMHO!

Got to be honest, I wouldnt have a problem with this coming in in the UK.

Modded cars are "generally" driven by tw@ts and probably account for a lot of accidents and hit-and-runs.

Just imagine no Max Power, no Nova's with 1000db exhausts driving through town centres - would get my vote!
