I've just sent this:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have just read your article "Chariot of fire: gold wheels optional" and cannot believe the comments your writer has made about the Subaru Impreza Drivers Club members. I know that these remarks have upset a lot of people in the Subaru Impreza community and as an Impreza driver I am angered by these bigoted comments. Also, there are several errors in the report, proving your writer does not know his **** from his elbow, as he would undoubtedly put it, notably "Next up is the WRX... This delivers 169bhp and 236lb ft of torque". The bhp figure is clearly wrong, but what can you expect from an amateur journalist? I think you should take into consideration the audience for articles like this and try not to alienate a high percentage of your readers.

Yours sincerely,

Graham Rudd

Is this really such a big deal, especially as it may be slightly tongue in cheek and correct.

Just another press bod trying to make it in world by writing a clarkson-esk article. Obviousely most of the information in it is a straight copy from magasines, which equates for the huge disparities and copying errors.

Wouldn't worry about it too much to be honest. It's not the first time Impreza drivers have been slated. First it was we're all drug dealers, then we are all Chavs and now we are baseball wearing shell suit morons.

We can all take comfort in the fact that the person who wrote the article will be leaving his untidy desk this evening and heading to his beaten up Corsa for the commute home to his dingy little press bod bedsit which has no proper heating or running water to think about what he can write about next week to try and make the editor see him as a serious player, and not just as a dump tub.

Who cares really!

sorry I was being a bit flippant about it, I agree that one should point out when facts are wrong, I remember the nightmare E30 M3 owners had regarding the timing chain and it got so bad it was actually affecting used values...

was also used to being called several names when I owned a BMW, so I am used to it, just instead of being called a w**ker I am now called a chav! I do pick my cars eh!

Please step outside the car, sir, and place your hands on the roof.

Think this is the comment that most people are being offended by - implying we are all crims?

It's not that bad. He is just making a point that not everybody wants their car to shout performance.

Oh and the journalist Peter Dron does IMO know what he is on about and has quite few years of experience.

and another thing:
all mX5 drivers are hairdressers
X5 drivers are pimps
2CV drivers are veggies
TT drivers are gay
and scooby drivers wear baseball caps

The conversations on this forum never fail to amaze me.. no one is throwing any toys anywhere over press comments.. but can't people be annoyed at distinctively biased comments in the press..? Tounge in cheek or not, some of Joe Public believe all they read in the papers and will come away with a bad image of a club that does nothing but try and promote the Impreza's image and it's members, not forgetting the charity work it does..

I seem to recall Jeremy Clarkson publishing samples of some of the letters he'd received over the years in the back "Born to be Riled" For example:

Dear Mr Clarkson,

You're a *****!

Sincerely,

.........

I would suggest that if you really want to make a point to the author of the above nonsense, you adopt a similarly terse style! :-)

He's implying that its likely to have been nicked M8. This Forums full of nicked scooby posts. ( Well not full exactly)

I found the article fine. It was tongue in cheek and if you can't laugh at yourself............

I mean who wants to drive around in a car with a huge tea tray bolted to the boot lid with unfeasably large wheel arches, pink stickers and gold wheels.

Especially as he said the pick of the bunch was the WRX Wagon which just happens to be what I've got.

Obviously Dron is someone who knows what he is talking about.

it's not the worst write up in the world in all fairness, it's just the guys been a dick in some of his 'witty' lines.

'paint the red callipers with black hammerite'

'all the I/C sparay did was clean the headlamps'

if he'd left out the 2nd paragragh it wouldn't be bad, but **** me talk about stereotyping.

Whats the actual problem of the writer putting these things in there? Only people who are interested in the car will read the article anyway,

End of the day the press are there to give there opinion, no one is ever going to be 100% in agreement. It sounds like just a bit of fun which points to the fact the bloke cant afford to buy one

Ok guys,

To put this into perspective, for those that have put "not bothererd" comments, are you a member of the club??

I'm gussing if you are a member, you would be genuinely concerned about the comments made as they will bracket you in what has been said.

If your not a member, I guess your answer is "so what" I'm not a member doesn't concern me...

What would it be like if they mentioned "Scoobynet" or "LADS" or "Scoobycity" or "TTS" instead???

It's not like they categorised "Impreza Drivers" in general they picked on an innocent car club, which in turn could effect membership numbers in the future..

Not good IMHO...

Some of the poor reputation of scoobies going around could be resolved by following a few simple steps.

1) Stop selling the cars for 20p and a packet of crisps to any man on the street. You're making them cheap enough for any scumbag to buy - hang on to the car till the values improve or burn your car and claim the insurance money rather than selling it cheap to some gypsie.
2) Avoid cruises - grown men shouldn't be gathering in public places because they have the same car - gives the rest of us a bad name.
3) Make you car a bit more difficult to steal - If I see another "some scumbag stole my scooby" thread I'll go nuts!
4) Stop putting stickers on your car - these always look naff, and your not 12 anymore.
5) If you are going to modify your car, keep it to power mods - any other mods should be run by the taste patrol or avoided at all costs.
6) Regarding congregating in Tescos car park, see step 2.
7) Yellow cars are not cool, so don't be spraying them yellow.
8) Lighten up a bit - if the man from the newspaper makes you cross, just go for a drive and you'll be all happy again.......

My two cents anyway........

Have you all read the article, apart from the grossly unfair stereotyping it was a pretty damn complimentary review, short summary:
1 has an image problem (we all know this, most of us don't care, needn't have rubbed it in so much or been so personal)
2 virtually impossible to find a quicker A to B car especially STi
3 preferrs WRX because more compliant ride and relaxed delivery
4 preferrs wagon because more practical

So frankly apart from (1) who would argue, many would agree with (3) and (4), lets all lighten up!

As has been said if you read the lot he actually seems to be quite impressed with the scooby. Apart from a few obvious errors and the tongue-in-cheek intro it's not a bad piece.

I had to laugh at the I/C switch bit

I have to wonder if he really was taking a pop at the SIDC at all, maybe he just meant 'Subaru Impreza Drivers Club' as a collective term for us all?
